She's in her late 80s, is about 4'10" and MAYBE 80 lbs. She has broken several bones simply because she's fragile. Your advice is misplaced.

Was not trying to be a smartalec. I know my FIL 79, has one and my mother always had access to one of mine at the farm before she moved to town at 82. Many snows, something besides a basic car could buy time. Sorry if it offended.

Really starting to pile up here - we've probably gotten 4-5 inches. Any little puff of wind makes it swirl around everywhere. I told the vixen she'd better head for home soon - she works over in Webster City.

We just have a dusting of snow so far in the hinterlands, although some very fine snow is still coming down. Husband has meetings in Des Moines and Newton today.

Social media implies that snowpacalypse in Des Moines. So how much snow in Ames caused that massive wreck on I-35?

This is one of those days where I am very relieved hubby no longer commutes to DSM. Schools let out early, but the roads have not been touched so we will see how long the ride home is. Also glad the oldest does not drive yet.

It did sound kind of cavalier. Apology accepted.

By way of explanation: She's a tough old bird...at least she WAS. She only quit working a couple of years ago. However, she has early dementia, and as mentioned, her bones have become brittle. PapaLew goes down there weekly to do chores for her that she can't do for herself (and the two daughters living close by can't handle). She doesn't drive any more (her daughters drive her around). Some folks are more able to handle vehicles at a greater age than others are. It also helps to remember I'm almost a generation older than you, and our parents are probably different ages. :)

3-4 inches. Some blowing. It's cold, so what's on the road is probably a bit icy. The plows are only clearing one lane in the middle, and the damned semis blow through and cause mini-whiteouts when they pass slower moving cars. I HATED being on 35 when it was snowing.

It isn't really how much we have gotten, but that is a light slick snow and plows didn't seem be too out getting a head start. All morning people were talking about getting stuck on the hils, on University by the horse barns, in and out of the ditch on county line road. And all that was before that big accident happened.

I suppose maybe it was too cold for the brine they put on the roads to work much.

Great day for husband to drive all over central Iowa. He'll always give me the old, "I learned how to drive in Canada, ay." spiel.

Started snowing here right around 11:30...just tiny flakes. It's now "officially" snowing. Parking lot's covered, but can still see grass and leaves. Husband's supposed to go to Mt Pleasant tonight. If it stays snowing at the same rate as it is, it shouldn't be a problem.

Just looking at the picture of that pile-up makes me tense. There was a video going around on social media earlier this year of a similar pile-up. The person taking the video and a friend stopped and eventually started helping people get out of their cars before more cars came crashing into them. In the video it was like an ice fog, and everyone's going the speed limit. No way to stop and no where to go when they finally saw the hulking tractor-trailer.

I'm thinking that direction should be fine on the snow but what do I know?

Hoping that Bon-Ton bankruptcy filing doesn't mess you up.

I went about 3 weeks without being able to see YouTube clips on here after 5 years of being able to see them. Now, I can see them again. I don't technology well.

I'm still struggling with some of your images. I can't seem to open anything from "giphy". It may be an Apple vs PC thang...
