Random Thoughts X (The 9th Regeneration)

In my early days as a prosecutor I was handling a speeding ticket based on speeds calculated by the Iowa State Patrol using aircraft. Before the trial, as we were standing in the hallway, the Defendant said he was going to do me a big favor and let me dismiss the ticket at his cost, because his testimony would undermine the use of aircraft in future cases and make them useless. I fought back a chuckle and told him I'd take my chances.

In Iowa you can request a jury trial on a speeding ticket, which he'd done. They deliberated for 3 minutes before returning a verdict of guilty.

Good thing I held the line that day or the incredible precedent of an adverse Iowa county Magistrate decision might have destroyed the use of airplanes to prosecute speeding tickets throughout the world. View attachment 49098

He grabbed it around the belly. The cat proceeded to bite him several times and scratch him repeatedly. And he'll probably have to get a tetanus shot. His job pretty much sucked last night.

Today's grounds crew meeting--scruffiness a cat 101. Obviously he had never grown up with a cat. On the upside, he is pretty internet famous today with all sorts of screen shots of his pain now internet memes forever.

Bird, did you see the softball team that got booted for flipping off another team in a picture?

Yup. A little controversy with what preceded the action (another player and coach for the opposing team caught stealing signs and were booted from the game--that is a whole other issue) but definitely think it was the right action to take.

Jesus, does the guy try to grab snakes by hugging them then? Didn't see the incident in question but can only imagine how much damage an angry cat could do held like that.

I thought the cat was fairly calm when he was carrying it off. Not like the time our cat got away when she was in heat. I found and caught her before she got any and had to bring her back home. It was probably half a mile and I must have lost a few vials of blood by the time I got her back.

You **** blocked your cat!

I don't remember it with great specificity, but he was trying to argue that due to the curvature of the earth, the calculated speed was grossly overstated and unreliable. I would have been more impressed if he pulled out the plane on a treadmill.

I was once pulled over by the Iowa State Patrol not by a radar gun, but a stop watch. I knew they used stop watches on the stripes that are occasionally painted across the lanes of traffic exactly a quarter mile apart- usually from planes. I didn't know they exactly measured the distance between two overpasses and used stopwatches in a patrol car to time your travel between overpasses. And he didn't give me any break either. His calculations stated I averaged much less than a tenth of a mile per hour over 80 in a 70 zone and he wrote me up for 80.
