And...Box, Sara, KC...you should be proud of your families' service, and I thank you.
An acquaintance was once talking to me about joining the legion via the 'sons of the legion' branch...I had to explain to him that I had no knowledge of any military service in my family, and was certain of it back thru my great grandfathers. Kind of ashamed to admit that my grandpa missed WWII because he was needed on the family farm (that one is somewhat legit...great grandpa was farming several hundred acres at that time with horses, etc.), my dad supposedly (I don't know this for a fact, but I've been told) was not medically cleared for the draft for Vietnam...his doctor wouldn't sign it because his acne was so bad, the doc claimed he might get infected in that climate, and I considered ROTC/National Guard to pay for college rather than go into debt, but my mom lobbied me pretty hard to abandon the idea and was ultimately why I didn't.
While I'm proud of my family, our history of service to the country in the armed forces is far from valorous.

I'm jealous. I sent in a form to foster a Corgi this week, hopefully they'll approve.
my family on dad's side at least has always just missed the big wars. my mom's dad served in Korea and a great-uncle (dad's side) we are close with was in Vietnam. My great-grandpa was late 30s/40s during WWII (late teen in WWI) and the only son on a farm so he was too young the first time, and then on the older side and the main breadwinner on the farm. My grandpa was 12 at the end of WWII and then again, the breadwinner on a farm during Korea. My dad and uncles were all just coming out of high school in the mid-70s during Vietnam. Think my dad actually graduated a few weeks after the war ended. They had friends with older brothers who got drafted, but they were all just under the cut.
I guess I've never really felt bad about it, they were doing other important things too. And most of it was really just the timing. Though I suspect none of them would have jumped at the chance to serve had circumstances been more favorable.
Yeah, my gf has spent the last few months selling me on them and it's worked. She's going to have to endure some disappointment when I fall in love with some strange-looking mutt with short legs.

That grandpa died when I was 11 and I don't have a picture of him, but he's buried on Chaplain Hill at Arlington. I have a picture of his grave...
That said, I'm equally proud of the rest of my kids and my husband. I just saw Sara's pic, & thought I'd share my vets also.

My parents both had aunts and uncles that served in various branches and capacities. Dad also had a cousin that was a load master in the air force.
Much like 00 I debated going in/ROTC. My mom was not a fan of it either and ultimately talked me out of it. I still debate it doing the ANG.

A friend of ours who is between our two military sons in age has been serving in the Iowa National Guard for somewhere around 12 years - he's with the Blackhawk unit in Boone (Griffons, I think?). He has actually spent more time deployed than either of our boys. I find that to be an odd factoid...
