My fiancee's sister doesn't have Facebook either, and she's 18. Her explanation makes sense though.

She has Twitter for her "status updates." Even then, she rarely uses it.
She has Instagram for photos.
Those things along with not having Facebook greatly reduces the "social media drama."

I've never an 18-year-old basically live without social media. It's incredible, as well as admirable.

You know twitter and Instagram are social media as well, right?

I haven't had a social media account since I was 19. Admire me.

Like I said, she rarely uses it. She hasn't posted anything on Instagram in four weeks. She last tweeted on April 18. Before that, February 23. She basically lives without social media.

I guess I don't understand all the hate on social media. I don't ever see any of the drama people always talk about. Maybe because of who I accept as friends? Maybe it's just easy for me to ignore because I don't give a **** about it? If anything it should just make it even easier to determine who is a dip **** and who isn't?

Yes. Exactly

I can see your point. Some of our student employees were on Facebook when it first started, and it was streamlined, fast and not bloated with "stuff".

I think one problem people have is not just with which friends they have, but how many. More people, more crap in your life. I tend to do more reading & commenting on other posts than generating status updates. I try not to be "that mom" with my kids' posts. They operate on a WYSIWYG basis like me, though, and that makes it easier. I never see them post anything they wouldn't say right in front of me. I have a few news/sports/politics sites that I follow, and use the messaging feature because it's faster for me than typing a text.

Parents of minors should ABSOLUTELY be on facebook and monitoring their childrens' social media activity. Parents of college age or older children should back the frack off.

Facebook did kind of get ruined once I accepted requests from family members.

I'd say 2/3 of my friends (~90) are related to me. So for me, Facebook is a totally different vibe. You do realize you don't HAVE to be "friends" with family members, right? It's that old thing - you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your family. However, you can also pick when you are available to them.

Right, but once you accept the request, there's no going back.

Deleting a family member from Facebook creates a-whole-nother type of social media drama.
