Minnesota seems to be the same way. I got my federal refund and immediately had to give 70% of it to the state.

When we moved to Iowa from California, we had 1/2 year IA taxes & 1/2 year CA taxes. Did a rough estimate of the CA and they owed us about $25. Got lazy & decided to not bother sending it in. Several years later we get a notice from a collection agency...for failure to file. Not only did we not get my money back, the collection agency was empowered to charge us for having to track us down...and it was pay up or boom, zap the credit rating. It's been over 30 years so I don't remember all the details, but we went from California owing us about $25 to us owing nearly $100, most of which went to the collection agency.

California math.

anyone else think about money constantly?

No. I do not say this to be rude or mean, but I will be truthful. While I do not actually know you, it seems to me that from your posting history that you have an unhealthy obsession with money. Again, while I'm typically the smartarse, I do not say this to be a smartypants.

You're absolutely correct but I have no idea where this comes from. I've never denied it - in fact I've actually spoken to professionals about where this comes from. It's weird because my family has never been poor so there is no deep ingrained reason to worry.

Trust me - it sucks.

Yes and no. I am a business guy at heart and I have everything on spreadsheets to make it easy.

Generally I just care about what we have left over to put towards other debt or maybe a little fun. I am a big Dave Ramsey guy and can't wait till we get out of debt here in a years.

No matter what though it is money. Holding my son puts things in prospective real quick.

More or less, yeah. But I come from a single parent, dirt poor family where it was a matter of daily survival.

I think it just became engrained in me from that? No matter how well I'm doing, it's a constant paranoia for me. Probably doesn't help living in one of the most expensive places in America to live and having a slight heart attack every time I buy milk at 7.99 a gallon.

As it relates to my finances? Not really. I keep an eye on them and am aggressively paying off my car loan, but I'm a 30 yr old single guy who doesn't have many financial obligations.

I do get tired of listening to one of my roommates complain about his financial "hardships" which are all self inflicted. I mean of course every 23 yr old kid straight out of school needs to buy a 30k vehicle and insure it in the greater nyc area. Even better to make that purchase and then try to make your budget work!

Well, one possible reason to look up...little ones can drastically change your perspective. However, they can also amplify your issues as well. Keep working on it.

Another possible point of thought...there has never been a eulogy given that listed the deceased's assets as a point of value...at least not one that sounded inspiring.

I'll grant you that this particular obsession, like eating issues, is especially hard to deal with...it's not like you can stop dealing with money, or stop eating. The only thing I can tell you is that with me, having grown up...not poor, I guess, but not well off, and we certainly knew what it was like to have money be a limiting factor...for me, I 'worry' about money only to the extent that I manage it and automate it well enough so I don't have to worry about it, and won't have to worry about it in the future, God willing. For instance...I'm certain, that by micromanaging our checking account at a lower balance, we could be making a fraction of a percent of our net worth better return by keeping more in interest bearing accounts...but by keeping the level we do in there...I don't have to look at it before writing a check or wondering what automated payments will be coming out when.

I'm totally coming to your house and taking your envelopes.

Does Hawaii mainly import all of its goods?

They encourage you to "buy local" but the locally grown eggs are double the cost of ones flown in from the mainland. Yet they claim they have to make grocery costs so high because of the cost of getting them here in a timely manner. I'm almost 100 percent certain it's all just a money grab, like most things around here.
