Random ISU/Tech Notes (from a Tech fan)

For those of us who live in AZ now - we are not sure if he is indeed an NFL caliber coach He got to draft his favorite QB (all 5'8" of him) and trade away a helluva great RB in David Johnson and we still aren't sniffing the playoffs.

That's an all time great trade in the Cardinals favor. Bill O'Brien is an idiot.

I think the only real hope Tech has is that Colombi(backup QB) starts and just clicks right away. Heacock's defense on the road in your first ever Big 12 start is a tough task to ask but I feel like I know how Bowman would perform against this defense because we've already seen it in 2018.

Bowman was 32/56 323 yds, 3 int's and 1 TD. He's just going to take the check downs and quick ins while falling right in line with what Heacock wants.

Colombi may be the exact same way or worse, but there is at least an unknown factor there and Colombi is much more willing to run than Bowman, which I think is probably one of the two to three keys to cracking that defense. Colombi isn't going to break 30 & 40 yard runs on anyone but just converting 3 or 4 3rd and shorts with your legs could make all the difference.

Pretty much nailed that. When Tech trotted Bowman out, I knew the game was already over. Tech wouldn't have won had Colombi started the entire game but I think it wouldn't have been as ugly. Yes, I know ISU was probably more lax on defense and probably had some backups in but the offense looked night and day different with Colombi in.

Other than that, it was total domination from Iowa State from the second Tech returned the blocked FG to late in the 4th. ISU was better coached, had better players and outclassed Tech in every aspect. Tech hasn't been that thoroughly dominated since last time they played Campbell.

Matt Campbell has Tech's number and I have no reason to expect that to change. Congrats. Please try and stay a little humble and respectful, I could never cheer for UT & OU due to their arrogance but I would like to be able to root for Iowa State going forward.

The QB part is what I don’t get. The game before this one, didn’t Bowman play the role of hot knife to our defense’s proverbial stick of butter? I legitimately feared Bowman before this game.

What happened to him? Did the injury change him that much?

Bowman didn't face Iowa State last season as he was once again injured, I posted his stats from two seasons ago in Ames earlier in this thread and they weren't great. 3 int's.

We really don't know why Bowman has regressed so much from a promising start as a true freshman but the popular theory is so many injuries(injured every single year of his Tech career) have rattled him from standing in the pocket and going through his read progression. Now, he's checking down early and often, as you saw all day on Saturday.

Colombi looks so much better at this point, Tech fans are baffled and frustrated why Bowman came back out leading the team after half. That of course doesn't help when Colombi comes in and immediately leads the team down the field and then eventually scores after reviewing catch after catch.

Of course things that have transpired since really influence it but ISU chasing Patrick Mahomes all over the field forcing mostly moon ball throws will be remembered for quite some time.

There’s always a few nimrods in every fan base, but I would like to think ISU fans come no where CLOSE to as arrogant as those of OU and especially UT.

We have a good defense and all, but there was just a total lack of inventiveness from TTU. It's clear our guys just sat on the quick routes and dared him to go over the top. The run game wasn't there at all either-- which is easy to do when you primarily only have to defend 5-10 yards from the line of scrimmage.

I also thought TTU's play calling was bizarre. A handful of 3rd and long runs, or throws short of the sticks.

I think that goes clear back to the Pirate. He did what he did with the short passing game and he would continue to do it even when behind the chains. He would often get the ball short to a RB or receiver and expect him to make a play. That passing attack was predicated on getting the ball to playmakers in space and letting them create the big play from a small beginning. ISU has seemed to have cracked the code on defending that.
