Raising Speed Limits Cost Lives

I have some family in Nebraska and there are spots where a 2 lane highway is 65
I can never get myself to go that fast. It's also a little hilly so coming up over those hills where you can't see, terrifying
It's a lot safer to go 65 on a rural two-lane than it is to go that or faster in heavy traffic on a freeway.

Fast cars, poor roads, minimal seat belt usage, and lots of teenage baby boomers. What could go wrong?
Seat belts did not become standard on cars until the early 60s, and wearing them did not become law until the 80s. Lots of narrow roads back then, with not much of a shoulder if you went off the highway. Just like gun deaths today, we just took it as what happens when people drive, until we started to look into how to make it safer, lowering the speed limits, mandatory seat belt use and safer vehicles with air bags and other safety measures. We could do the same with gun deaths if we had the political will to do so

the amount of people still sitting on their phones all the god damned time while driving is absolutely infuriating. I just want to scream every time I see someone doing stupid and then pass them or see that their on their GD phone.

Put the damn thing down and DRIVE

I've honked at people just staring at their phone while driving, usually scares the **** out of them.

I am of the opinion that people don't honk enough. You have a horn use it. Nearly every time I pass a car hogging the left lane I give the horn a quick tap. Most drivers are so unaware they don't even realize they are blocking the flow of traffic.

When you said control YOUR temper like adults do.

My bad honestly I meant it generally. I see people enraged behind the wheel frequently where they tailgate and do incredibly dangerous stuff all the time and I find it incredibly childish.

Yes, for .01% of the time. People are not just going to start running into each other for the 3 miles a year they have to drive.

Also, I've noticed that if it's rain that is stopping the cameras from working, you should probably pull over because if the camera can't see, neither can you.
You are totally ignoring that people who rarely drive manually in this scenario are now asked to drive in the absolute worst conditions without the regular experience/practice. Think about how terrible even people in the upper midwest drive during the first significant snowfall of the year. They have to get their "snow legs" so to speak. Now have them not drive it for a couple of years, then suddenly try again in whiteout, slick conditions.

Not to mention the increase in fuel costs.
counter point German Autobahn.
"The question of safety on the Autobahn depends very much on who you’re talking to. In 2019, the German Federal Transport Minister, Andreas Scheuer, claimed that Germany’s roads were ‘the safest in the world.’ There are reportedly 1.74 deaths per 1 million vehicle kilometers driven on the Autobahn. For reference, that number is 3.38 in the US"

it was awesome driving in ND a few years ago where it was 70mph on the rural 2 lanes.

That only accounts for an increased severity, not number. IMO, more cars and more distracted drivers are far greater causes to the increase in accidents.

Speed may contribute, but that isn't happening in a bubble.
not to mention our honestly poor driver training requirements, and they made it even worse recently unfortunately here in Iowa.

I'll say the biggest issue is people not paying attention driving. just had that issue tonight in town responding to an EMS/fire call. had my blue dash light going, but still got stuck behind farmer john in his truck going 5 below the limit through town. put my car where I could directly see my light in his side rear mirror even, and he still just moseyed on down the road.

Please tell me you aren’t one of the people who gets on my tail and flashes your lights when I’m already going 5 over and clearly passing someone slower in the right lane.
