RAGBRAI XLI

I don't think about it the rest of the year but when I'm on RAGBRAI, especially in the morning before it gets hot, I can't get over how beautiful Iowa is. The 'BRAI is awesome. I'm biking all of it this year and I'll be eating pie until I get sick.

Agreed. LIke riding in an impressionist painting, very pretty. I'm fond of the little towns off the beaten path as well. We have usually stayed with families and I've never been disappointed. Incredibly hospitable as a whole..

I don't think that the Register or the host towns are being hurt by non-registered riders, but non-registered riders do use the porta a pots, add to an already congested traffic situation, etc. The limit on the tickets is not because the Register doesn't want more money, it is to try to control how big the ride gets. I always make everyone in my group register for RAGBRAI because it does cost money to put on RAGBRAI. I don't mind someone hopping on for a day, but there are several groups out there that have the mindset that since they are not camping in the campgrounds that it is okay to not register for the whole week.

ragbrai is going to get the money from 10,000 riders no matter what. I have no problem donating to them but why take a spot from a rider who can't go unless with ragbrai's truck for support. Too each his own, but ragbrai is getting their money either way and i am okay with the more bikers the merrier.

Coming out of the stop at Perry, when do you think the first riders will begin to reach WDM (specifically 40th and grand)? 10 or 11 am?
The first riders will probably be rolling in much earlier than that, especially because it's a short mileage day, but it should really pick up around 10. It also depends on the weather. If it's really hot people will be earlier.

Riding the whole week. Looks like the weather will much better this year.

.

I'd guess 5am but probably earlier.... with thousands of riders you get some that early & some a day late... along with everything in between... Most leave by 7am (not me though) to avoid heat but really they just miss the fun along the route....

If they leave by 7 when does that put them there though?

I live in Harlan. If someone has a big problem. I will be in Ames until 2 pm on Sunday if things go right. Check back to this thread and post a request after 4. I will oblige as many cfers as I can, if they are having major problems.. Oh ya eat at the Methodist Church at 9th and Durant. Tell the old guy in the black toupee that the hawks aren't even fun to play anymore. Email at [email protected]. I have to go to bed about 9ish that night so after that your on your own.

I'm signed up to volunteer to assist with associate activities in Des Moines on Tuesday and will ride DM to Knoxville on Wednesday. This will be my first time and hoping to get a feel if this is something I might want to go whole hog on next year.

BTW...if anyone is interested in volunteering in some capacity to welcome est. 30K riders in DM, here is a link to sign up:

I'm supposed to meet a group in Des Moines. Even though I don't have a registered support vehicle, will I still be able to get into the Water Works Park, set up a tent, and greet them as they arrive?

Are you actually donating?

If WW Park is a designated campground, it does not appear they will let you in. See no. 10.

It depends on how long they stay in the towns/bars... I'd guess a lot of folks will get in by noon-3pm. Beach Girls might keep a few of us out a little later... I'd guess I get in town b/n 5-10pm... No real schedule for me & that is most riders m.o. Its a week w/o rules or cares, typically the best week of every year...

I don't get too bent out of shape if someone gets a wristband or doesn't. I get one every year because it is pretty expensive to put this thing on. We have both those who get wristbands (most) and those who don't (a few) on our team. If I wasn't able to go one year and then found out I could at the last minute I wouldn't have any problem riding without either. I have ridden all or part of the last 17 years save one year I couldn't due to a new job. In all that time I have never used a sag wagon once. In my early years I was poured into a handy friendly team bus for the last leg a time or two, however.

Only $5 to see Hairball tomorrow night in Perry! You should make the trip even if you aren't riding.

Looks like my hometown neighbor is riding in a group dressed as cows. One of other members of the group is an ISU alum, so say hi!

Bump. Just finished the Perry to Des Moines leg. Thanks to all the small towns, volunteers, spectators and riders who make it such a special event. You're awesome, Iowa. Don't ever change.

Alot of riders today. Clones repped well today for college jersey day.
