Quick Thoughts on Texas

Texas is going to roll....A competent passing would have shredded ISU yesterday. That being said, I hope I'm wrong.

Hi Bostrem00, can you please tell us why you think Texas is going to roll against ISU? Of course, I share your concern about the challenges we had in the secondary on Saturday (though I suspect the staff either held out or reduced the snaps of some key contributors to get them healed up). However, the Longhorns still have some big questions on the offensive side of the ball and I'm not sure I'd describe their passing game as "competent" yet. They barely completed 50% of their passes against USC and have a team QBR of 128.1, only good for 62nd in the country. Their best o-lineman almost certainly won't play against ISU and their running game is only so-so (44th in total rushing yards which included 406 yards against a very weak San Jose State team).

Overall, I'd say that if we can keep doing what we are doing offensively (protecting Park, protecting the ball, getting receivers open, running DM enough to keep the defense honest) and cut out the dropped passes, we should be able to grind out enough yards and points to put us in position to win because I just don't see Texas scoring a lot of points.

Hard to tell with TX. Maybe USC is simply overrated, again. Maryland averaged 6.1 yards per carry and 18.3 per pass in their game with the Longhorns. They gave up 482 yards in that game. Texas also scored on a pick 6, and punt return, which you can't count on happening every game.

Bottom line is take care of the ball, stop the run game from going wild and don't forget to cover the WR and ISU should be fine. TX has better athletes, which is alway the case. Just need to pick your spots and make plays.

I agree with this take. Texas run game is only so-so and about to get worse with the probable loss of their best offensive lineman. Chris Warren, Texas main threat in the running game, is competent but doesn't really make his own plays, which he would have to do w/Texas O-line struggling. With Tongo getting more snaps and Jamahl Johnson likely returning, we should get even better defending the run between the tackles and we are reasonably good right now. A wildcard w/Texas run game is if Ehlinger plays QB because he can hurt us with his legs.

My biggest concern for the Cyclones defensively is accounting for Collin Johnson, Texas 6' 6" main receiving threat. Averaging 122 ypg, he had 191 yards on only 7 receptions against USC, including a monster 4th down conversion on Texas last possession in regulation. We have no one who can cover him. After him, Texas receiving corps, while talented, drops off considerably in terms of production with no other Texas receivers exceeding 50 ypg.

So, if we can contain their running game, scheme for Johnson, find a way to keep getting pressure on the passer, we can make it a challenge for them to score enough points to win.

I remember there was one play where he pushed his man all the way back into the QB

Yeah he may not put it all together this year, but his ability to just blow his guy up is awesome. I obviously hope we have a chance to make a bowl this year but next year should be the year where we see the real improvement. I'd love the extra practices for guys like him and Leo that from all accounts have the physical tools but need the reps to get better technique.

I watched the Texas/USC game and my biggest takeaway was that UT's front 7 is really good. I thought the USC coaching staff did a horrible job adjusting to their game plan and continued to run their plays right into UT's strengths. The majority of USC's success was when they spread Texas out and let their receivers make plays. I don't know why USC was so hell bent on trying to run between the tackles where they were clearly out manned.

I expect us to attack UT like Maryland did. The majority of our run plays are going to go to the edge. Texas likes to blitz multiple linebackers, so we are going to have a lot of man to man coverage to exploit. If we can pick up the Texas blitz we are going to hang some points on the horns.

It will be interesting to see what Texas team shows up. Texas secondary looks to be the weak point of this defense. If ISU can get the TE involved in this game early, we could see a lot 1-on-1 coverage for our WR's.

Hope we get that coverage. We can work with that all day long.

I was hoping Texas' end of regulation lead would hold and that would lead to them getting over-confident and complacent during the bye-week...

I thought the strip of QB Ehlinger from Texas by USC in OT which was allowed by the referees, was similar to the strip made by Jeremiah George that was blown dead and not allowed when Iowa State played Texas a few years ago. We definitely got hosed by the refs on that call.

Texas has talent. Should be a great game. Pack the Jack.

The only difference really was that USC pulled the ball out to the ground and fell on it before the whistle blew. Jeremiah George simply stole the ball from the Texas runner at the one yard line and took off toward the other end zone. They blew the whistle as he was at about the 5 or 6 yard line, I think there was no ref that actually saw him strip the ball.

There was a similar play in the Nebraska / Arkansas State game. NU was returning a kickoff after a safety. The NU ball carrier got stripped and the ball went to the ground where Arkansas State recovered. However, not one ref reacted as if they even knew that there had been a fumble. You know, running in to the pile to see who has the ball. So, first down, Huskers. When challenged, the refs said the same thing they said at our game, "well, the forward progress had been stopped so the play was over" (even though the whistle never blew). Let's face it, refs miss a lot and unfortunately some things are not allowed to be reviewed, such as this. Yeah, I know I should get over this, but I just have an overactive sense of fair play.

Sounds eerily similar to what would be an effective game plan against us. Attack the edges with the run, which we have problems containing. Exploit man coverage when the LBs attack the backfield, which we have show we like to do a lot this year.

And don't forget the RB/TE drag route 3-5 yds downfield. My tickets are on the SE corner goal line at JTS and I am still having nightmares seeing Wadley catching the ball on the drag route with Lanning trailing behind him. Not that Texas' RBs are near as good as Wadley, but just saying...

It may actually be a game if we hang onto the farking ball, unlike Iowa. Because, we likely won't be running a whole heck of a lot.

Well combined with the suspect pass defensive backfield, the inability to create a pass rush against an abnormally mediocre Iowa offensive line, and the stat that isu has blown double digit leads in the second half, and the fact isu has beaten Texas twice. They've won 10 games in the last 4 years. How can you realistically pick them with complete confidence against any team not named Kansas, assorted Missouri Valley team or random MAC team.

Damn it I've just about got myself convinced to buy tickets for this game, then read all these posts about why we'll lose to Texa$. Still probably getting tickets haven't been to a game for a while.

I don't think we've hit our stride yet, as evidenced by choking away a win against a team we should have easily handled, but I'd be shocked if it isn't a good game next Thursday.

We haven't played near our best, yet it's been 6 games in a row with 500+ yards. Despite drops and inconsistent run blocking we're averaging 40+ and scoring with relative ease since late last season. Park is living up to his recruiting rankings as one of the best QBs in the country. Montgomery is near the top in the Big 12 and the best RB we've had since the early 2000s. You're a troll if you can't see that combo making this team a tough out. You mentioned pass rush is lacking, yet we lead the conference with an inexperienced group that should improve. The pass defense hasn't been good enough, but KCM will make a big difference, as will all the new guys improving. We blew the Iowa game, yet we also came back in that game rather than folding. In the other two we expanded the lead.

UT always has more talent, yet several of the games with them have been close, if not games we should have won. This year is pointing to another good matchup.

Hopefully we pass on first down early, and gash them with DM after they are on their heels.
With this being the second team that may have the 'best defense we play all year', we'll have to play fast and catch the ball.

I don't have confidence we win, but I'm still likely coming from Eastern Iowa on a Thurday night. I enjoy watching this team and have lots of confidence in this staff and the direction it's going. Also, can't beat a September evening in Jack Trice Stadium.

Texas's freshman qb isn't very good, yet. You can tell he lacks experience with his hesitation and lack of quick reads. I fully expect him to remain the starter going forward over Buchele, however, because Herman will be able to run more of his offense with the mobile qb. I expect a very close game and a win. 35-32 Cyclones.
