I've created just some simple QB Stats for Iowa State QB's dating back to 2004. I was just curious to see it all laid out in front of me and thought I'd at least share it.

The highlighted name is who took the most reps that season. The boxes in red are the highs throughout the years.

For how terrible we were in 2014, Richardson had an OK year from a number standpoint compared to some others... although QB rating was terrible.

Brock Purdy could be one of the most consistent things to happen to Iowa State in a long time.

Most Passing Yards: Brett Meyer- 2876 in 2005.
Most Passing Attempts: Sam Richardson- 451 in 2014
Most Passing Completions: Sam Richardson - 254 in 2014
Most Passing Touchdowns: Brett Meyer- 19 in 2005
Most Interceptions: Brett Meyer- 13 in 2006 and Austen Arnaud- 13 in 2009
Highest Completion %: Kyle Kempt- 66.3% in 2017 (Brock Purdy 75% doesn't qualify)
Highest QB Rating: Kyle Kempt- 145.9 in 2017

Can someone come up with the QBR for Joel for all of last year?

had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that we won 7 games despite scoring only 13 TDs through the air and 11 on the ground, but then saw the we scored 6 defensive TDs and 1 PR.

You can see why we struggled when you see in over half of the years our primary QB was completing less than 60% of his passes. I am not suggesting that that is all on the QBs, just that completing less than 60% is not a recipe for winning especially when you are shooting for an even pass/rush balance in your offense.

Here is a great story from The Athletic if you have a subscription.. I took this graphic from the story.

“I think that’s been one of the most powerful stories of our team from the inside,” Campbell said in his office this week. “From the outside, there’s a lot of stories people want to talk about. But the inside, it’s been really Kyle’s demeanor and his leadership.”

Easy to forget that Richardson was a 4-year "starter"

Guy just couldn't put a whole season together

What stands out the most to me about Purdy are two things: completion percentage and yards per attempt. 12 yards at a pass at a 75% clip is fantastic. Nobody else on that list is anywhere remotely near that level of production, and that's also ignoring the production he adds with his feet as another major asset.

Problem is... It's still early. Have to see if these numbers are sustainable, or at least close to.

QB accuracy was a huge problem, especially when you consider that many of the years above ISU heavily utilized the quick horizontal passing game. Additionally, how many times over much of this period, particularly the latter Rhoads era, did we see completions on quick passes, but that were inaccurate enough that threw the timing off on the play? In the QBs defense, I thought our WRs during that same time had some drop problems and almost never made difficult catches.

Probably an even larger problem was offensive lines that had QBs regularly running for their lives. Hard to be very accurate when you hear footsteps and you've already been sacked 4 times in the first half.
