True, running game wasn't there. The problem is, though, is the entirety of our passing game (QB and WRs) is so bad that defenses can play run defense and dare the offense to beat them in the air. Last week when we burned TCU on back-to-back drives for two long TDs it opened up the running game somewhat. Never were able to do that this week.

Yes indeed. Defenses doon't need to respect the pass. They can load up the box and stop the run. How difficult is that to understand. Which is not to say that the O-line deserves a free pass. But when a QB is throwing 3 for 15 (or whatever) you're not going to have a smashing running game going.

When you are behind and chasing points, you generally are going to favor the pass. It was the pass game that we needed in the second half and the unit wilted under the pressure. The run game wasn't good, but the pass game failed.
 
Of those last 2 drives, only pass that I really blame Barnett for is the missed Shontrelle pass. Wide open but he needs to hit that pass.

Young dropped 2 must catches and easy catches on the last drive. I can't blame Barnett for those.
 
Look, I'm as tired as anyone of the QB questions... But I think 43% completion is just not gonna cut it... Missing wide open receivers repeatedly isn't as bad as turnovers but come the **** on man.... I don't know what we do here but I think its safe to say that we are screwed against anyone with a decent defense...
 
The bottom line is, to win in the Big 12, you need consistent, competent QB play, WRs who don't drop catchable passes, and and an OL that both protects the QB and opens up holes for the running game. ISU just doesn't have any of that.

I loved your post up until the One exception. Where is Jantz's upside higher? JB has proven to hit the long ball more consistently, he runs the read option better, and doesn't turn the ball over as often. I'm not trying to be a ****, just asking where SJ has proved once this year his upside is that much better than JB. When in the pinch, you stick with the guy who kept you in the game with ta possibility to beat the #6 team in the country.

I'm just hoping this loss doesn't hurt us in the eyes of voters. KSU is a legit team, we had a chance to beat. But, we'll probably be ragged on next week for being typical ISU.

Behind but not by much. Plenty of reason to run.

And we held a lead for a while in the first.

I understand they keyed on our run. We keyed on theirs too. They shut ours down and they still could run. Our ground game has not helped us support the passing game all year.

There has to be someone on the team that can throw a ball without thowing picks or 123 out. Barnett looks the same as he did last year. How many more picks did he get lucky on today that he almost threw. This is getting old I'm open for new options because Barnett will not get any better. ISU should have won the game passing and someone did not show up to play!

I can't really put much blame on the O-line. Anyone with a decent defense can load the box against us and play man on our WR because they can't get open. Then we're basically trying to run against 7 or 8 defenders in the box. Hard to block 7 or 8 with 5 or 6 and win that battle.

Maybe the 'upside' wasn't the right term. I guess what I was thinking was especially on a few of those final plays, JB just kind of hung in the pocket waiting for something to develop that never did, then it was almost too late to get much with his feet. Normally, it's a weakness for SJ since he doesn't wait long enough in a normal game mode, but it seemed to me that SJ might have gotten something more out of nothing at the end there. Again, would not trade them in a normal game situation, but when there's nothing to lose and how those played out, SJ might have gotten more from what I've seen him do. I'm sure some of this is grass greener on the other side of the fence, but I posted after tech how SJ bailed out too soon, in those plays there, it might have helped.

Obviously, all opinion at this point, but just my 2c.
 
I just know if I was the OC and the quarterback couldn't throw and the receivers can't catch, I'd keep calling pass plays....wait.
 
I think JB is our man but I could see Sj being in there fo a two minute offense situation, and I would be curios to see both of them in there together on a few plays. Where was any gadget or trick plays though?
 
Unless we are talking about Richardson, does it matter? We have enough evidence to know it is a wash between JB and Steele. And if Richardson was anywhere near JB and Steele, it is likely we would have seen him get a series or two by now.

The very optimistic hope is that SR is in that exponential growth phase, and there has not really been a time to see exactly how far along he is. As far as JB, if he can get better at using his legs and eyes to compensate for his lack of pocket passing skills, maybe he ends up above average. His accuracy is a huge concern though.

K-State and our offense is a case study on how having a good QB can make the entire unit have success or failure. Switch QB's, and our offense would look just as good. Hopefully Mess and CPR take note on how to use a QB that cannot pick a team apart (although he can hit open receivers).
