Public records advocates sue Iowa State over details of Dublin football game

They should comply, but Randy will still write about it. However, is the person who is stonewalling in the governors office giving instructions to Pollard? Or is it Pollard himself?
He would write about how they complied?

He would write about how they complied?
Have you ever read his columns? He would probably start out by talking about how deep financial trouble Iowa State athletic department is in. Then he would talk about how stupid it was for Iowa State (did I mention they were in deep financial trouble) to go to Dublin for a silly football game between land grant colleges. “Why i am old enough to remember them playing at Clyde Williams.” Then he would talk about the charter. “Why I remember when Iowa played Minnesota and they took a grayhound bus that cost taxpayers $50, plus the driver’s tip. Boy how things have changed.” Then the governor. The money. Blah blah blah. Then he said the newspapers were doing their duty and filed an FOIA request and Iowa state (did I mention they were in deep financial trouble) delayed (two weeks). Then buried in his last paragraph would be, to their credit, Iowa State finally complied and provide a link to the Gazette story.
That is the typical Randy Evan’s column.

I’ve never heard of him before this thread, got some examples?

How do you know its making something out of nothing, when ISU refuses to release the records, which they are required to do by state law?

Just comply with the request and it will all go away. For far too long in this state, public institutions have not been following the law and refusing to release information. If there is nothing to hide, then release the records and show they did nothing wrong. If you really think this is about a dietician, an announcer working the game and ISU security you are wrong. All of those people would be part of the football staff and would be fine, but how many others, got a free vacation from this is what they want to know,

Because the athletic department can spend their non- publicly funded money how they see fit.

They can bring and pay for anyone they see fit.

Yeah ISU should have sent the information but it’s a stupid witch hunt.

I don't care what the expense was for Reynolds to fly over on the ISU dime was, hearing her get booed off stage at the tailgate, and then again during the pregame was priceless.
You should have been there at the 2023 Knoxville Nationals. About 15,000 people booed her introducing Ron DeSantis.

If you want to know what biases Randy Evans has, read the last paragraph of Bleeding Heartland, which published his column. In that paragraph he put the knife in the back of Iowa State fans to remind us that we lost our head coach and we lost all of our players to Penn State. Of course that has nothing to do with the purpose of his FOIA, but he wanted to stick that knife in.

You lost me at Bleeding Heart.

If this is all because of Reynolds then good riddance. She's useless. If you're going to prance around and talk about how youre an ISU alum then at least make an attempt to push the levers of government in favor of ISU. Not even in favor just make the funding levels equal! All the hawks in the legislature blatantly favor Iowa in all their legislation but God forbid you stick up for ISU.

Also the state in general needs a more sec mindset. If you're going to pass stupid and useless laws then pass some that help that athletic departments lol.

Anyways sorry for getting political.

Who cares how many others got a free vacation? That’s the AD’s call. It’s his budget and if he wants to treat some big donors it’s his decision.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t comply with foia, but there’s no such thing as a gotcha moment here. Pollard could pay for a golden leprechaun toilet on the plane and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Now, it wouldn’t be a wise use of funds and something like that would come up in a performance review, but it’s not illegal.

Sure, but it certainly doesn't help when you're trying to get the State to put money into athletics. The last thing you need is a trail of unnecessary current spending when you are doing that.

I get wanting public entities to be transparent in their spending, but if I’m reading this right, seeing $845,435 in travel expenses by 285 individuals comes out to $2,966.44 per a person doesn’t seem that unreasonable for a transatlantic trip.
Agreed. Think I spent $4-5k for my 12 day trip and I was being relatively cheap outside of 5 nights in 2 fairly expensive hotels. That and getting a manual instead of automatic rental is about the only way I could have spent significantly less. Had I not been solo for a week it would have been at least $1k less.

That's not the way it works, any money the university spends falls under public spending act, no matter where it comes from. There are not two piles of money here, state and then private money. Once the university gets their hands on it, it all falls under the law and must be shown where the money was spent. This is a good thing in general, its stops public universities and government from giving sweet heart deals to their cronies.

No one is saying they cannot spend the money as they see fit, only they have to disclose where and what the money was spent for. ISU has refused to provide the documentation where the money went, it might be legit it might not be, we will never know if the records are not made public. That is the point of the law.

We don't know if it's illegal or not when ISU refuses to release the records, that is the whole point of public disclosure laws, to keep the public informed about where the money is being spent, which allows everyone to see where the money is going.

is a good thing, if someone is giving a million dollars to the football program, they want to make. sure that is where the money is being spent, not on some other program, and this type of laws show where the money went.
