PSU Campbell Presser

Penn State hasn't won the Big 10 in almost 20 years. After one upset (where they lost by like 5 points), they fired the guy who was a touchdown away from making the national championship last year.

I get it, but if you like/have faith in someone, you probably don't do that.

Details but they won the B1G in 2016.

Still not the program that it would seem for popularity.

Besides the two really bad losses this year after Oregon to UcLA and Northwestern (where PSU was 20+ point favorites), Franklin’s real downfall was a 4-21 record against Top 10 ranked opponents. AD says the expect to “regularly compete for National Championships.” So you need to regularly beat Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana and Michigan, as well as CFP opponents. I submit those expectations to you, Matt Campbell, their 11th choice by some reports.

I guess I don't blame them for firing him necessarily. I guess maybe the point of disagreement is I don't think James Franklin is particularly likable, but I suppose it's possible that PSU fans like him but just think he's incompetent in big games.

Yeah I get you point but after 10 years he is what he is. And that UCLA loss was horrific. That was really what did him in

But your first point is valid as to why they aren’t a blue blood and why their coaches will have a longer leash
We don’t really know how long the leash is. But I’d offer that the AD has set the expectation to “beat Top 10 teams regularly and compete regularly for national championships.” Their fans view the Mangey Lions as a blue blood. This new coach is just “some guy from the B12. If he doesn’t align to expectations at any point, he’s easily disposable. He’s not like Saban or Urban Meyer, who have proven they could meet those expectations. I could be completely wrong, too….

That’s just AD talk, just about every new hire gets the same talk about competing for championships in the P4.

Also this is purely anecdotal but none of the PSU alums I know or have interacted with have that level of privilege that many on here as assigning them to. They want to beat top ranked teams as a top ranked team more then franklins 4-21 record which honestly isn’t a huge ask.

To your point though the leash might not be long if he doesn’t majorly step up the recruiting and if he drops some of the games he dropped at ISU that’s going to be a very hot seat. He wasn’t their top choice by a lot and most people aren’t super excited to have him

This is absolutely spot on. For me it will always be “you talk about”

My Twitter is littered with Penn State fans right now for obvious reasons. They are definitely going to have themselves talked into essentially playoff or bust expectations by the time next season starts. They’ve decided that Matt was actually the best hire they could’ve possibly made. The bowl game today has them believing that momentum is strong and keeping Terry on will continue it. All this combined with one of the easiest schedules anyone could imagine and Matt’s margin for error in year one will be quite small.

The last few weeks before break there weren't players on campus? He can't work connections etc in Happy Valley?

What was he going to do at the Pinstripe Bowl? …..
I was referring to the trip to NYC, not the last three weeks.

Regarding what Campbell could do one this trip?— interact/evaluate/recruit roster players that may not know if they are returning to Happy Valley. Rub shoulders with wealthy alumni who helped Ped St bankroll $30+ million in NIL. Be the face of a program which he is now the HC.

Yeah there aren’t wealth alumni at the pinstripe bowl to watch a 6 win PSU team. Maybe you get a couple that live in New York already but they aren’t showing up for that.

Yup, maybe only two wealthy Ped St. alums go to bowl games. OK.
It’s the pinstripe bowl for a 6 win team in a baseball stadium.

Dude come on now. Why in the world would anyone of real wealth/means go to that. As I said maybe if they were already in New York or planning a NY trip then I could see it but otherwise no way.

Yeah...and the cold weather was talked about during the broadcast as much as the play on the field was! Agree...that was not where many of the "influential" Penn State fans were today!

Yeah NYC got some crazy amount of snow, the pictures from Central Park were awesome

Cold isn’t a huge deal with box seats but still no one who matters is going to that pity bowl

Uh, I am going to take a wild guess that YANKEE STADIUM has some rather nice luxury boxes for big money Penn State donors to use.
