Predicting Coaching Staff

With the University's posting for an assistant football coach, there is going to be at least one change for 2013. How about adding Sage Rosenfels as QB coach and recruiting coordinator?

Bill Bleil - Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line
Todd Sturdy - Offensive Coordinator
Courtney Messingham - Wide Receiver / Tight End Coach
Sage Rosenfels - Quarterbacks
Kenith Pope - Running Backs
Wally Burnham - Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers
Shane Burnham - Defensive Tackles
Curtis Bray - Defensive Line Coach
Troy Douglas - Secondary Coach

All good except for Bleil, please get rid of him soon CPR!

I don't understand everyone's love affair with having former players as coaches. Is it a feel good thing or what?

I always wonder if our offense could have been great, and the play calling was bad. Or vise-versa.

Probably both we're bad. Maybe with Jantz gone and all the ball droppers gone and a hopefully a better o line and maybe a new coordinator, we can compete with Baylor and West Virginia...

I don't think it is a love affair. From my perspective, the best way to sell the program is to have an ex-player who knows what it takes to be a D1 athlete and did it in Ames. I don't think you need more than one. CPR uses I grew up close to Ames a lot. Also, seems to be working for Fred Hoiberg.

Austin Flynn is currently the Offensive Coordinator & QBs coach at Grand View in Des Moines. I wouldn't be surprised to see D1 coaching in his future but a jump from Grand View to Iowa State is a bit high, in my opinion.

Also, I do believe (although I could be wrong) that current Offensive GA and son of OL Coach Bleil, Kevin Bleil has coached TEs before his time in Ames.

Yes, but last year when Ellis Hobbs was apparently a candidate, CPR went with Troy Douglas. Not sure if Marcus Robertson was ever a serious candidate.

I would freak out if Flynn got the gig. Of course Austin Flynn is my 2nd all time favorite Cyclone...couldn't tell you if he'd be a great coach but I'm on board with the hire....in case anyone from the AD is reading.

Just tweeted Sage a link to the application. I will credit myself if he gets hired.

In 2006 Guz Malzahn went from high school head coach to Arkansas offensive coordinator. I don't care who replaces Wells, as long as they can recruit at a high level to go along with their coaching.

Especially when people are wanting to bring back McCarney players.

I wonder what Lane Danielsen is up to these days.

Going with Douglas last year just shows he had a better resume. It would be hard to pass up a guy with Troy Douglas' credentials.

"Douglas' Iowa State tenure begins in his 25th season as a college coach. His initial Cyclone season marks his 23rd year in the defensive backfield. He has coached in a total of 10 bowl games, including six straight postseason appearances. Douglas recently completed his third season as Carolina's defensive backs coach. He has tutored 16 players who have players in the National Football League."

Out of curiosity, do most people see Sage as OC or just QB's coach. I would be stunned to see him as an OC, and to be honest stunned to see him as a QB coach. Perhaps a wide receivers or tight ends coach at first. The guy doesn't have any previous coaching experience to the best of my knowledge and he has no experience in our system.

Why would this stun you? Granted, I don't know much about coaching or football schemes but it seems Sage is a pretty smart guy and has NFL experience that he probably gained a wealth of knowledge from. Also look at guys like Major Applewhite, Josh Huepal, and Kliff Kingsbury. Those guys were from roughly the same time period as sage and are all either co-oc or HC.

...and have been coaching for a lot longer.

Unlikely but why not a guy like Tim Brewster. He has NFL experience unlike anyone else on our coaching staff and he has coached both tight ends and receivers. He is currently wide receivers coach down at Mississippi State. Once again I think this is very unlikely but I personally think it would benefit Rhoads in recruiting to get a guy with NFL coaching experience on his staff.

QB is the most important position on the field. I simply think it's more likely that if Rhoads were to hire a guy like Sage who hasn't coached he would be pegged at a position like tight ends. Major Applewhite and Josh Heupel both were graduate assistants before becoming full time coaches. Heupel coached tight ends for a year at Arizona before becoming QB coach at Oklahoma. I'm pretty sure even Kliff had some type of office position at Houston before being tabbed as an assistant coach.

They were good players so they obviously have to be good coaches right?

Im fine bringing someone in with little or no previous experience in a very low role. Sage as OC is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I assume you were heavily against the hiring of Hoiberg then?

Just a feeling, but whoever is hired will most likely have Texas roots. Texas is an area that we recruit hard and that was where Wells mainly recruited. We need someone to get back down there.
