Podcast Recommendations

I highly recommend Menace 2 Society. It features Zach Smith(the OSU coach that got fired last year) and he sheds light on everything in college football. It's not about him and his life but he talks recruiting, some his past experiences with Urban. It's really good

538's politics podcast is pretty good IMO. It's got a slight Democrat slant, but they do a good job talking about the subjects from an analytical standpoint (I would hope so, considering that's what 538 does).

Dan Carlin had one called "Common Sense", but he has stopped putting them out (his Hardcore History stuff is more popular and I think he feels like the current political client is in some ways unprecedented to the point where he was questioning whether he has much to add). He is by no means a centrist--he is fairly left of center on civil rights and personal liberties, but he definitely didn't drink RNC or DNC kool-aid. So this doesn't really help you at all, except that some of his old shows are interesting.

There may have been better podcasts done on the topic, but I think "Unhealthy Numbers" (which was released 3/15/17) and looked at the US health care system, was especially good in that it didn't go down the typical party-dominated discussion points. In the end, he advocates single-payer.

But I understand if you aren't interested in 2 year old political podcasts.

Dave Rubin is mostly Libertarian, but he has his share of more liberal guests quite often. I know he had Andrew Yang a few weeks ago and it made for a good discussion. He doesn't go for the "gotcha" type of interview questions either. I think he's been trying to get Pete Buttigieg on but has been turned down so far. It's pretty crazy the influence some of the political podcasts have now. Rubin regularly gets 1mill+ views on his episodes. Its a great way to here an hour+ discussion with a single candidate instead of the worthless debates where each person talks in 30 second soundbites.

As a former flight control engineer (business jets, heavy turboprops and regional aircraft) that designed autopilots and managed the flight control department I found this very interesting. I was not aware of the Iowa State connection.

I know my company was proud that Neil Armstrong's famous words were sent over our radios. The podcast talked about some issues with communication on this mission. I wonder if my company's equipment was at the heart of those issues or if that was a different set of radios.

Cool, thanks for sharing the personal story and connection. For what it’s worth, it sounded like the radio issues were all line-of-sight, so maybe they’re off the hook?

The little things about that podcast are what I love. For instance, I never really thought about the reasons behind why they were going long past the markers on descent, which led them into the boulder field that they had to avoid. Turns out it was all because of a little extra air in the hatch between the LM and the CM. The hatch pressure popped them off with a little extra exuberance that they didn’t notice.

Also, I could listen to a Gene Kranz podcast by itself.
 
Sports Wars with Dan Rubenstein from The Solid Verbal is good.
 
Political Beats

It is by National Review, but it has 0% political content.

It consists of a series of 1-4 hours discussions of various classic bands and artists' discography. Part history, part review, part just cool stories about a band.

I did the two-parter for the Beach Boys driving to Pittsburgh and back this week.
 
Listening to the “10 American Presidents” podcast episode 1: Dan Carlin On Richard Nixon.

Spoiler: it’s very very relevant to today.

So for anyone that doesn't follow the LeBetard podcasts on ESPN, they have done a couple of Jim Brockmire podcasts (Hank Azaria character). They are fantastic even if you don't like Dan's other work.

For those of you that don't know about the Jim Brockmire character, you really need to catch up on the show. Season 1 was one of the greatest TV series ever.
 
"Wind of Change" was pretty enjoyable. It's about the conspiracy theory that the CIA wrote the Scorpion's song of the same name. Lots of historical tidbits about stuff that went on in the Cold War.
