Player that Showed Up Last Night

And how about AJ Klein. Seriously. An absolute animal out there.

He was amazing out there last night. I believe that he is the most improved player on the defense from the start of the year to now. He just looked like he was a step slow in the first couple games but he has really stepped up lately. He rushed Weeden on the first interception and tipped at least another for LJ's int and had several open field tackles. Props to him and the rest of the defense.

AJ Klein and Jake Knott have to get some NFL looks, right?

They're not prototypical NFL size/speed guys, but they are EVERYWHERE a play is needed to be made. I think the NFL is too enamored with their "measurables."

Well I could go on and on who was the main guy. Woody, LJ, Barnett.... But after that last interception did anybody else wonder how the hell did Knott end up covering Blackmon?

Exactly! And covered him like a blanket! That to me is the single best play of the game. LJ, Woodie, Barnett etc all played great all game but I don't think we win without Jake Knott.

That was the first time all game they put Blackmon in the slot instead of outside against Leonard. They surely thought they could sneak him in there for a mismatch against a LB, but Knott had great coverage and Benton right there to finish the play.

They aren't far off of NFL size & speed. How do they compare to Chad Greenway as a Jr? Klein especially reminds me of Greenway.

Ok, so I looked it up:

This year Greenway is listed at 6'2" 242#
Klein is listed at 6'1" 240#
Knott is listed at 6'2" 240#

(judging by looks on the field, I don't know how those two could weigh the same. Klein looks 15 pound heavier to me).

Here are the things that I noticed:

LJ didn't give a cushion and played much of the night in Blackmon's face - typically most corners got torched deep when they tried this but LJ pulled it off.Blackmon was open at times, but they disrupted his routes and on many occasions forced Weedon to second and third reads which he was not near as comfortable with. The other corners I did not really notice as much in pass coverage, but that is good because it means that they were not getting beat or missing tackles.

Klein and Knott are freaks. On several occasions they made plays 1 on 1 that if they missed would have been huge gains. Also the OSU players were getting knocked back at every tackle instead of falling forward and that left a lot of yards on the field for OSU that they typically get. The tip that Knott made on the interception is an elite play - he read it perfectly and made an NFL caliber play.

The O-line looked great at times and when there was pressure there were open lanes for Barnett to run or buy himself more time. OSU had to stunt or blitz to bring pressure much of the night.

The WRs looked better than they have in a long time at making people miss. Gary, Horne, and West all looked very tough to tackle. This is finally starting to look like the offense that it was supposed to and hopefully will continue to get better.

I know that there is more to mention, but just a few of my observations.

How about our D-line? I think they played very well and pretty nearly stuffed the ground game. Must be partly because we have some real depth there now, whereas in past years, the D-line would have been exhausted going into the fourth quarter. I think the Cowboy D-line got more tired than ours, and it showed in the overtimes. Of course, the fact that our offense kept their D on the field so long helped too.

Darks had a nice game. Big drive saving catches. What years is Broomfield?

LJ has been doing it all year. Remember, Weeden likes to target blackmon like 20 times per game. Weeden had almsot 60 pass attempts and LJ held Blackmon to 99 yards receiving! Thats outstanding. Blackmon is perhaps the best player in all of college football.

Also, Blackmon isn't the only receiver LJ has shut down this year.

Marvin McNutt
Kendall Wright
Jeff Fuller
Texas Tech
and now Justin Blackmon

he won't get his shot at Ryan Broyles (thankfully) but Kenny Stills is one hell of a player, and I think he will be held under 100 yards as well! Go LJ!

Our secondary was on fire last night. They deserve a large share of credit for last night win. One of the things that makes last nights game so memorable is that there was no one player or one side of the football (O or D) that was single handedly responsible for the win. It was the team as a whole, playing as one cohesive unit that got us the win. It may sound cheesy but it's just like CPR says, we play as one team, we win the game.....needless to say, that wasn't a direct quote but you get the picture.
