I remember watching this fight when it was live, and hating Jones, but being unable to deny how friggin amazing he was. That kind of spectacle is good for the sport.
Ah, thought I was posting in the best boxing round thread. Either way, the boxing threads have been more fun than most so far.
The closest guys right now that will always guarantee you an action fight/will not dance around avoiding punches/will not refuse to fight anyone put in front of them are: Maidana, Provodnikov, Mathysse, Golovkin, Danny Garcia, Guerrero, Cotto, and Kovalev. Another guy with a great balance of skill, yet not a total defensive guy, is Andre Ward. If any of those guys is on TV, you can bet your *** I'm watching.
The heavyweight division has really suffered from a lack of speed on recent years. With "super" heavyweights taking over, the game has changed to favor bigger, yet slower heavyweights. Marciano, Ali, Tyson, Holyfield, McCall, Lewis, etc. were speedsters compared to the Klitschkos and Valuevs of this past decade.
Larry Holmes is probably the most underrated heavyweight champion of the 20th century. Even if not because of his speed, but his fundamentals. The guy had the most devastating jab in the sport. He was victimized by the lack of anyone with a name to beat, unlike the guys in the early- mid-70s. But in my opinion any list of the top 5 heavies of all time that doesn't include Larry Holmes isn't a list worth reading.
Some people hated the fight but I thought it was decent. I wanted Pac to win but I don't see how anyone in their right mind could say the fight was even close.

I keep seeing this but have those saying that ever watched a Mayweather fight? They are all like this.
Well, I've seen a couple people claim Manny did more damage with what he landed. There was one instance where it looked like he rocked Floyd a little but Floyd landed more solid shots on Manny than the other way around. Manny had opportunities too and I think that's where he lost the fight. He'd get May in the corner or on the ropes and he couldn't do anything with it.

I agree completely. Manny really had a chance to do some damage in the 4th(?) round where Manny landed a couple and Mayweather looked stunned. But Manny couldn't capitalize.
Sorry, the argument that people somehow no longer have the attention span is bs. And it goes beyond the product in the ring. The fact this fight even took this long is a big part of the reason the sport is dying. The fight couldn't have been worse if this had happened long ago when these guys were in their prime As it should have. Putting the debate of whether this particular match was entertaining aside, organizationally the sport is a mess and thats its biggest problem.
It's not bs. There are other options that are more "action packed" and people would rather watch those events. Boxing is in a similar spot to baseball, IMO.
They have that and he goes by the name name GGG. Gennady Golovkin is a middleweight destroyer from Khazakstan and talks exactly like Borat. Tune into his fight on HBO in 2 weeks you wont regret it.

I feel bad for anyone that paid for that fight on Saturday that didn't know what they were getting themselves into. That's how all of Floyds fights go, nobody can touch him and the outcome had nothing to do with Manny's age. Manny wouldn't have touched him 5 years ago either. Floyd is just that good.
For the casual fans, it sucks you picked that fight to try to get invested in but don't give up. If you have HBO, set your DVR for the fights the next two weeks. Canelo Alvaraz vs. James Kirkland will be the slobberknocker you crave on Saturday and then the next week GGG fights again. He's destroying the middleweight division and has 19 KO's in a row.
Protip: Make sure you listen to the post fight interview with GGG, he sounds EXACTLY like Borat.

thanks for the tip, I loved boxing as a little kid, but it was a great era for the sport where the best fighters like Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran were also lots of fun to watch, and obviously there was the rise and fall of Tyson.
100% right. Unfortunately all of the potential great American heavyweights are playing safety/linebacker/TE in the NFL.
