Thanks for pointing this out. There are a lot of myths about Mizzou and Nebraska and their performance, that switching conferences has made a big impact. It has not.

On the flipside people try to claim Nebraska's struggles are tied to being in the Big 10 and make all these reasons tied to recruiting (losing old recruiting grounds, etc.). Bottom line is their recruiting hasn't slipped.

It's REALLY simple for both of these. When Pinkel was coach, Mizzou won in the Big 12 and SEC. When Pelini was coach Nebraska won in the Big 12 and Big 10.

It's all about the coach. If they hire great coaches they will win. If they have bad coaches they won't. It's that simple. People can explain why the conferences SHOULD impact things like recruiting, but the bottom line is that for both schools the recruiting and SOS hasn't really changed all that much. Their coaches have changed, and that's why the results are different.

Prior to Pinkel getting sick and retiring, their classes hovered right at 34 after joining the SEC. The coaching change likely had as much to do with those numbers than anything.

But, your point still stands. Saying Missouri is recruiting better since leaving the Big XII is not true. And I, for one, could not be happier watching them fade into obscurity.

If there is any material expansion or realignment on the horizon and with subscription services gaining on old-line TV distribution models, schools and conferences will be looking at how to maximize revenues on this basis. For purposes of this conversation I'm done with the consideration of TV market size.

I was a skeptic about our Big 12 success after this last round of anguish but I'm feeling pretty good now. So if I had any say in reinforcing our conference I would NOT pull in any schools named after a city, a person, a faith or in a third time zone. I think that covers it.

That's my criteria, and only slightly tongue-in-cheek.

Your second paragraph is awesome! I somewhat get the diminished importance of market size when it comes to television these days...but what do the business guys running the leagues/networks/streaming industries look at instead? The Big Ten Network way of doing things is probably long gone (forcing themselves into cable plans and profitting off of those who have no interest in sports). However, market size reflects the potential to make money in a variety of ways. USC/UCLA are always going to be more attractive to the accountants figuring up the dollars than Iowa/Iowa State will be. I LOVE Iowa State...but it is the reality. The markets in half (or more?) of the PAC12 are always going to get the attention of those trying to profit off of college athletics.

Your discounting the player revolution and administrative problems at mu. It was a dumpster fire.
