OWH Article on Stevie Hicks final days

I feel bad for Travis Cruise too, that would be hard as I would wonder if I could have changed his mind.

I thought the same thing.

I had a cousin who I grew up with and he took his life 14 years ago. The day before he died I was in town and was told he was having problems. I thought about going to see him, but I was a selfish 21 year old "moving 8 miles a minute for months at a time". The guilt stuck with me for a long time. The guilt stil haunts some family members, that's why suicide is such crap. You think you're ending pain, but in reality you spread that to the innocent 100x over.

Travis, I hope you feel no guilt, Stevie did this and no one else. My prayers go out for his family and friends.

Reading that broke my heart all over again, we'll always love Stevie. I didn't know Danny Goodwin was his uncle, and he was another great Cyclone.

That was one of the saddest things I have read in a long time. What a horrible ending to someone with so much promise. I think it goes to show that college athelets, especially football and basketball, are not prepared to enter the world after college. They all think the pros are a sure thing. They need a plan B.

I think they put so much pressure on themselves to make it in the professional leagues that they feel they let everyone down. People need to really stress the fact to young athletes that the odds of making it to the professional level are astronomical.

For every Lebron James, there are thousands of kids with a dream that in all reality, will never come true.

RIP Stevie Hicks

A stark reminder that it is just a game. Great perspective from Herb Welling, "There is more to life than sports." Its a game that we love and the players love. But it remains just a game. Athletes grow up literally being worshiped from junior high (at least) on up through college. When their dream ends, it has to be so, so hard.

I feel so bad for Stevie's close friends and family. My prayers go out to them.

During this emotional time of coaching change/search, its easy to get caught up in it all. As Cyclone fan I certainly hope that the current players stay here and end up showing "that the aren't a 2-10 team." But what really matters that these are young men who are living out their dream right now. For almost all of them that dream will end in the next 1-4 years. I hope that they are given great support and advice through this hard time. I also hope that we find them a leader.....to help them be successful here in football but much more importantly.....in life.

Just a really tremendous waste of a great young man. Let this be a reminder to the others to help out if you can if you see a friend so disposed. Young people not living very long just tears your heart out. He had so much given to him by God and yet it was not enough. Rest easy, 27.

Do not forget the companion article:

Stevie graduated with his degree in Aug 07 just before the first Kent State game.

Just hard to accept.

why is it that no matter what I do or when I do it I can't get the link to open? I want to read the article but for some reason either I get the "Internet Explorer cannot open this webpage" message or it just loads forever without coming up. I would like to read the article but no luck.

If I may make a suggestion. Go here and download Firefox Firefox web browser | Faster, more secure, & customizable or go here and download Google Chrome Google Chrome - Download a new browser

I am guessing either one will work better for you.

I think that makes this story a lot harder to understand is because of the "Happy Face" he always had on. Everyone has tough times and thats just part of life. This guy had so many friends and hopefully family that would of helped this guy out. It may of been hard for him to admit that he was having problems because people thought he was this high spirited guy that was gonna be "ok" in life. Very nice article but sucks we have to read things like this about our fellow Cyclones. RIP Stevie
