OU postgame thread

Offensive line was much improved (and quite a bit better than “no good”). They certainly weren’t dominant, but they weren’t dominated either. Still a work in progress, but today was a couple steps in the right direction.

Hmm, ok. I'll revise to "servicable". Biggest difference, I think, was Zeb's ability to get rid of the ball and not hold on to it. There were a couple of times the OU defender shed their block but Zeb managed to throw to a receiver before getting hit. Part of why I like him over a healthy Kempt going forward.

You think not making it a priority to go to your tall capable wide receivers and putting your QB out as a decoy in the red zone isn't a problem?

Overall they were better at getting the ball to playmakers but this staff overthinks things when it gets tight.

We had almost 500 yards of offense against OU... Play calling may not be the biggest issue this game?

Zeb trust himself on those more risky throws than Kyle it seems. Not a hate on Kempt post, but if he’s healthy and plays is it a 10 point loss or more ?? Vs better teams you gotta roll the dice and I think Kempt woulda have been too conservative

Although I think it was a correct review-overturn, if ISU could've gotten that fumble call, it would've been a boost. Really could've used a turnover there.

Agreed although I'd like ISU to not need to rely on turnovers.

Easier said than done but sure tackles in space would have gone a long ways today.

True. There were some tackling issues, but I will say, OU players are fast and some were just elusive moves or speed situations and we couldn't get a good angle or clear shot.

Definitely don't want to have to rely on turnovers, but one more turnover forced vs. both Iowa and OU, could've made a difference between 3/7/10 point games, then maybe ISU is at least 1-1 now. (Obviously speculation, but the games were tight like that).

Not the biggest issue--that was tackling and back 7's heads spinning against a good offense--but in crucial situations? Running the wildcat from a shift in half the offense is a wasted down.

And this isn't the first time an OU has given up lots of yards.

I think ISU is decent but I'm not convinced that the players are being put in the right situations for success in tight spots, and that's also not a first.

I'm rethinking the wildcat now... We ran it 4-5 times always with DM and it's on tape for all to see. But the weapons in that formation - going forward if they work on it - could be a great series of plays/players from the same formation... Plays, formations and players is one of the mantras...

I have a few quibbles with the play calling but i completely agree the lack of sure stops on D killed us.

Agreed again--the turnover winner is typically the winner.

Bolded--I didn't think angles/reaction looked very good but from what I understand it's a young/inexperienced group so let's look for improvement.

So far under CMC ISU in October has been a very different team than September so let's see where things are then.

Is it Mitchell that's the dual threat QB? I think it's basically what they did last year with Lanning, except he was proven to be able to throw. Putting Noland out wide just takes away an option.

They DID get like 4 yards on one wildcat play but I still want to see the defense pressing and spread out, especially if it's Butler, Eaton, Allen, Jones, and DM as your potential pass catchers.

Your mantra is backward ;). Players first, then formations, then plays.

The wildcat just doesn’t look sharp at this point. The timing is weird. I don’t think Montgomery is comfortable with it. He doesn’t run like himself out of it. He’s a little tentative.

Sometimes I wonder if DM makes that Chris Berman Tecmo-Bowl sound when he breaks tackles just for fun.

Coach Cam is really making a cultural change at ISU, even after multiple mistakes in various aspects of this game and previous game, we are not not getting blown out.

In previous years, we would have lost these games by over four Touchdowns.

Great days are ahead!

its the little things against really good teams. a penalty here..a blown coverage there...there were a few little things that need cleaned up. nothing i saw today that cant be fixed.
