Optimism for Okie State matchup

Dear Football Genius,

I wish you understood the brand of football that is generally played within the conference of which you are a member. Let’s look at the Iowa State/OU game and the OSU/OU game, since you cite them both.

When you played the Sooners, you had a total of 9 offensive series and the Sooners had 8. In those 9 offensive series, you amassed 38 points on the scoreboard.

When OU came to Stillwater, we too had 8 offensive series to the Sooners’ 8, and like the Cyclones before us we scored 38 points, with one glaring difference. All this occurred in just THE FIRST HALF OF THE GAME!

I the second half, we had an additional 6 defensive series! That’s going to effect a defenses stamina and it’s game stats. However, when you break down yards given up per play, ISU averages 5.0 yards/play and OSU averages 5.3. Basically a statistical dead heat.

Your defensive stats benefit from you slow, plodding offense holding on to the ball for more clock time, thus reducing he amount of time you’re Defense is on the field. Iowa State is in effect, trying to become to the Big 12 what Georgia Tech is to the SEC. You hope teams built to defend the Air Raid won’t be able to adjust to your style of play.

Nothing wrong with that. But don’t think we can’t play defense. If you do, you’re not going to understand what’s going on this Saturday and you’ll end up blaming your OC for lousy play calling, which is the usual lament of those who don’t commend the coaching and talent that frustrated them.

BTW...good luck on your coaching search. It’s going to be a tough year to find another young guy hungry enough to come to Ames.

Dude I know it was probably frustrating watching Baker march up and down the field on you guys all day long but you need to relax and move on.

Not sure why, but I’ve got a feeling that Iowa State comes out guns a blazing and takes care of business.

I'm curious to see how both teams come out energy-wise and how fragile each is after adversity.

You have to be OSUproblems... you have to be. Samaje took a knee.

Dear football genius,

I wish you understood the competition in your own league. Georgia Tech runs the ball 85% of the time. iSu runs the ball 47% of the time. a better comparison would be iSu is trying to be KSU.

Maybe iSu should take a page out of OSU's defensive play book...play ****** pass defense and let people score as quickly as possible. Works well for oSu

It did get me fired up last night when watching the 2011 upset of OkieState on ESPNClassics. But then I looked at our line that game, Farniok and Osemele especially. I mean do we even have guys potentially that capable on our OLine now? Idk, it's just an honest question. Similar situation tho, that a first start quarterback(JTB) was pulling it off. Think the graphic said he threw over 50 pass attempts in that game. Whoa

Not a lot of people have a player with KOs ability. Not even Alabama. But yes, we have Farniok potential

OSU does have a damn good defense. He is right about that. He is wrong about a lot of other things. OSU didn't get sacks with just their front four. They didn't wear OU down. They had to blitz...A LOT to get pressure on Mayfield and they gave up big plays because of it.

iSu is second in the Big 12 in sacks allowed and have played 3 out of the top four sack leading teams in the Big 12. iSu has allowed 7 sacks or 1.4 per game since Kempt has taken over. The passing game utilizes a lot of short passes so the opportunity for sacks is limited.

Brailford vs Foster is scary to think about though. I imagine iSu will keep Seonbucher in there to help Foster or use Montgomery to chip him.
I never claimed that the front four got all the sacks, but go ahead and put words in my mouth if it serves your argument. What I said is that we are 5 deep at DT and 6 deep at DE, that we will platoon in fresh players every two or three plays and will over time where your OL down. Once that happen, the QB hurries start, followed later by the sacks and TFLs.

I never said who will get the sacks, only that your OL will be gassed. I’m not responsible for what you assume.

When and if you get an offense that can score 38 points in the first half against a Top 5 team, you’ll understand. Until then, by all means go ad hominem for the laughs, instead of adding to the football discussion.

Falling in Love A man fell in love with the girl of his dreams. They were perfect for each other, except for one minor problem: She was an Texas Longhorns fan and he was an Oklahoma Sooners fan. He decided to make the ultimate sacrifice and become a Longhorns fan. He went to the doctor and asked if there was an easy way to do this. The doctor replied, "Yes, it's a very simple procedure. What we do is go in and remove half your brain. When you wake up, you will be an Texas Longhorns fan." The man agrees, and the next week goes into surgery. After he wakes up the doctor comes up to him concerned. "Sir, I apologize, but there was a mix-up with the scalpel. Instead of removing half your brain we removed 3/4 of it. How do you feel?" The man sat up, looked around, and said "GO COWBOYS!"

Says the guy that claims his DL had five sacks in the second half against OU.

Your defense hasn't really stopped good offenses.
TCU- 44 points averages 35.8
TT-34 points averages 38.2
WV-39 points averages 40.2
OU-62 points averages 45

iSu's defense vs those teams
TCU-7 points off a kick return
TT- 13 points
WV- 20 points
OU-31 points

If Okie State stops iSu's offense, it will be because we have a poor run blocking OL and a QB that doesn't have great arm strength.

An interesting point, but it shows you didn’t watch the games you’ve cited. TCU scored a TD late after we turned it over trying to play catch-up. We also had two other TD ps off of TOs where our offense gave the Defense a short field to defend, which wasn’t their fault. Also, we had lost the entire right side of our O-line to injury, which gave TCU more offensive series than they otherwise would have gotten, on a day where it was 120 degrees on he field.

Texas Tech was a night game with the fans attempting a blackout, and 7 of those points came on a pick-six, somthe defense only gave up 28.

WVU had one TD on a blocked punt (not the defenses fault) and one TD on a pick six. So again, WVU only scored 25 against our defense, and again, our speed of play on offense leaves our defense with more series to defend. Oh...and WVU’s final TD came on a 13 play drive at the end of the game, when the winner had already been decided.

OU? I already explained that we had the same number of defensive series at the end of the first half as you had at the end of the game. Our defense isn’t responsible for the fact that your offense is slow and plodding.

Otherwise, nice thought.

Oh. Two more things. You didn’t mention what we did to Texas in the second half, when the Longhorns were playing dime and daring us to run. Our defense held Texas to one possession in the second half that wasn’t a three-and-out.

Second...ISU isn’t a good offense.

Yes. Okie State's front four will wear out ISU's offense and shut down ISU's running game late just like they did against OU.

Dear football genius,

Actually you did. here is exactly what you said
Count on us to run he same defensive scheme we ran against he Mountaineers. We’re going to stuff your run game and make your QB and WRs try to win he game. If you don’t have a deep OL, than look for the same OSU d-line that got five sacks on Mayfield in the second half, to continuously keep substituting fresh DLs to wear your o-line down. We’ve done this to everyone we’ve played this year. You’ll see opposing offenses come in and look relatively effective early in the game, and then we’ll start hurrying your QB, and then a quarter later, we’ll start planting him in he turf. It’s as predictable as the sun rising.
.
Nowhere did you state anything else. Strictly talking about the DL. Me thinks you thought the DL actually got the sacks and missed that your defense had to blitz to get pressure which of course is why OU hit big play after big play after big play

Our offense scored 38 points in 8 possessions against that team. Just like oSu did.
