Our schedule looks odd this year. We only play 3 games before Maui? All a week apart and against bad teams. The bad teams part is normal but we're playing fewer games, because we added a conference game?

I got chills watching this.
I have my ISU nutcup firmly in place and with how often Lipsy and Gilbert hit the floor I expect injuries this year.Agree.
With as high as I am on Indrusaltis, I'm having a hard time finding minutes for Heise.
If Milan and Jefferson can figure it out on defense, I expect we will be finishing close games with this lineup:
Tamin
Keshon
CuJo
Milan
Jefferson
I'm also hopeful that Nojas can have a Monte Morris-like freshman season....not a major contributor early but by the end could be getting big minutes. My guess is that Heise will get more minutes early in the season but Nojas will chip into those more and more as the season progresses.
My semi-hot take in the past has been that rim protection/blocking shots matter less in our defense because it's more about cutting guys off from the rim than altering their shots at the rim. That being said, I remember a couple of plays on Monday night where Jackson or Chatfield ended up trailing someone driving who got the ball to the rim and I couldn't help but think, "Ward almost certainly would have blocked that off the backboard."One thing that stood out to me that we aren't going to be able to replace is Ward's rim protection. Watson is probably our next best shot blocker, he might not get a lot of run most nights and it doesn't seem like a big part of Jackson or Chatfield's game. It's really early, I'm sure things will change but right now, idk that we'll have the rim presence we had last year.
Don't know what you were watching but he Chatfield looked to me like someone who can make a difference. Big but can move. He didn't shoot well but his past performance and tape say he will.I actually think we would just go small ball with Milan and Jefferson over playing a ton of Chatfield in league play . I didn't see anything from Chatfield that showed he will be more than a big body but I'm not going to totally bury him after one game.
I agree with all of this. I did notice Milan's hitch, but I'm not worried about him at all. He's got the right mind-set and work ethic to do great things this year.A lot of guys can put the ball in the hole. It will be very interesting to see how the team gels. Only one basketball.
- Lipsey and Keshon are who they are. Pretty much know what you’re going to get out of them night in, night out. I’d like to see Keshon be a little more patient/force it less, but it’s neither here nor there
- Curtis struggled early, but settled in nicely. Kind of a microcosm of who he is too. Just takes a bit to warm up some games. When he does, there isn’t a guy I’d rather have the ball than him.
- Jefferson was good. Pleasant surprise for me. Liked how he moved, really nice footwork and really liked the left hand. He needs to stay out of foul trouble, but I attribute last night to a crappy, yet chippy, opponent. We’ll see how he adjusts
- As many have mentioned Nojus looks good. You can tell he just belongs out there. I actually thought he looked good on both ends. Can he be better defensively? Sure, but I didn’t think he was a tremendous liability out there either. Has a smoothness about him and he is longer than I thought. Kid will be a good one assuming he keeps putting in the work
- Jackson was OK, IMO. He is a very big body, and moves pretty good. I felt he was slow on defensive rotations, and I seriously doubt he will be able to hedge up top like Bobby and Hasan did so well. We’ll see.
- Chatfield was OK. Not as impactful as Jackson, missed some bunnies he really needs to make. He might be a rotation piece but I’m not there yet
- Milan: ok…I might get smacked here, but after his first shot, which was a great stroke, he looked way off to me. Seems to be aiming, as opposed to just letting it fly. There is a hitch in his jumper I do not remember seeing last year. The talk about him having the green light and then not starting makes me wonder if there might not be a confidence issue there. I thought he did well on the boards and competed defensively, but consider me a tad concerned with what I saw offensively. It’s just one game, so I’m not going to overreact, but certainly something I’ll continue to watch
- Hiese was decent, but seemed hesitant. I’m sure there were a few nerves there. I didn’t see anything that would convince me that he deserves more minutes than D Wat, but it seems that is going to be the case. If he can knock down 3’s, and he did make one, maybe, but I can’t imagine he defends better than Watson and Watson does a great job of running the baseline and rebounding. Will be interesting to see how that shakes out.
That’s how I saw last night, FWIW.
Blocked shots are the most overrated stat in basketball. It's nice to have a deterrent under the hoop who can alter some shots, but if they're fouling a lot, or giving up offensive rebounds because they're lunging for every shot attempt they see, then it can become a net negative. My semi-hot take in the past has been that rim protection/blocking shots matter less in our defense because it's more about cutting guys off from the rim than altering their shots at the rim. Does CJones get credit for 2 blocks with his double-handed block?Blocked shots are the most overrated stat in basketball. A guy who can block the occasional shot, be a deterrent from teams going to the hoop at will, but also stay disciplined and not bite on pump fakes or not continuously leave the paint hunting blocks and giving up offensive rebounds would be perfect.

Yeah. That **** will drive the staff crazy if it’s still happening over the next game or two. Better get that corrected before Maui. Not trying to be "that guy' and didn't rewatch but I thought that twice we seemed to have the opposition pinned on the side with a double team and if memory serves me correct they passed out of it to an open teammate under the basket for an easy two. Don't know who's responsibility that was but that is why we play this level of competition early--to clean up little mistakes like those. We know what we have in the guard court and the numbers say we could be better in the front court but it may be a few games in before they are working together as smoothly as last years team.
Yeah on the post game TJ had a long list of things to be worked on after the 1st game. The doubled up score (close enough) didn't leave him overly impressed. Not trying to be "that guy' and didn't rewatch but I thought that twice we seemed to have the opposition pinned on the side with a double team and if memory serves me correct they passed out of it to an open teammate under the basket for an easy two. I can't help but be jealous of teams who play opponents with a pulse (outside of the early season tourney and the conf challenge games with Big East) but I guess it's only 3 weeks of the season where we dont play anyone interesting. Well 4 I guess if you count the games between Cy-Hawk and conference play.It is unusual.
I did a random check on several other P5s, quite a few will have played 4 by the time ISU has played 3 (or in some cases 4 v 2). I think the 20-game conference schedule (with it starting earlier) has something to do with it and there was method to the planning.
I thought maybe we could have moved an additional cupcake to pre-Maui, but examining the schedule, it's actually evenly distributed. With exception of Maui stretch, there's only one "calendar week" when ISU plays multiple games before B12 starts (Jackson State and CyHawk).
