On That Note: We May Never Pass This Way Again

Hargus ("Pig") Robbins, a piano player in the Country Music Hall of Fame who died in January of this year. I saw him play a few years ago on Marty Stuart's TV show. Marty made it evident that Pig was someone of reknown but I wasn't sure why and I don't think I realized he was blind.

One may have assumed (as I did) that Charlie Rich is playing piano on his best known song, "Behind Closed Doors", but it's actually Robbins.

We had a couple of posts for Terry Hall (The Specials) earlier in the thread …. here’s as member of Fun Boy Three + notable collaborations.

The More I See…

With Bananarama:

Hall also co-wrote this song, with Jane Wiedlin. Perhaps you’ve heard it:

Fun Boy Three version, released the following year — also charted, although The Go-Go’s version did better in U.S.

Another from Darryl Hunt (bass, The Pogues) … as songwriter, and backing vocal … this track was tagged for a single, but wasn’t released.

“Love You ‘Till the End” — from “Pogue Mahone” (1996)

And no one else posted the Rascals. Listening to their Time peace album, which is about as good as a Beatles record. Listen to the the drumming of Dino Danelli on this one.

I was going to post this one last night, but ran out of steam. Not that it was so late, but I was overwhelmed by the number of awards and credits this guy halled in. He could also be one of the hand full of people who made Nashville what it is today. And since he was rarely the feature musician, which videos would do him justice?
Amazing things about Pig Robbins:
  • His career spanned over 60 years
  • He was blind
Here is an obit piece from The Tennessean:

And what the heck, here is yet another of the myriad hits Pig was credited with as the accompanying pianist:

Pig Robbins very first gig was on George Jones "White Lightnening" in 1957, which was one year prior to when Charles Grassley won his first election. o_O It's a good list since the Piano is quite prominent.

Somehow, I missed this thread entirely when it was posted. Anyway, a handful of my favorite songs by three of those the music world lost in 2022...

"Why Me?" by Irene Cara. This was always my favorite by her. Made it to #13 on the Hot 100 in 1983.

"Twist of Fate" by Olivia Newton-John from the Two of a Kind Soundtrack, my favorite of many songs by ONJ. This was her last top ten single, peaking at #5 on the Hot 100 in January of 1984.

"Paradise Tonight" by Mickey Gilley (and Charly McClain), a #1 Country Singles hit from 1983. It was originally from McClain's solo album, Paradise. The song was SO popular, they ended up recording a whole album of duets, producing a #5 single (Candy Man) and another that peaked at #14 (The Right Stuff). This clip is a rare "live" performance from Solid Gold.
