On That Note: Supergroupthink

I'm With Her, a folk/Americana/bluegrass-ish supergroup composed of Sarah Jarosz (Grammy-winning solo artist), Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek member and solo artist), and Aoife O'Donovan (Crooked Still member and solo artist). Only one full studio album together so far (from earlier this year), but they've been performing as a group since before Hillary picked her campaign slogan (to preempt any silly complaints there). A truly incredible group making some of the best music out there IMHO.

Their Tiny Desk from earlier this year:

Great cover of a Vampire Weekend song:

Great cover of an old Utah Phillips song:

Great cover of a depressing John Hiatt song:

I liked GTR but, if I recall correctly, they were pretty much a one-hit wonder.
Yup. The debut single went to #14 on the Hot 100 (#3 on Billboard's rock tracks chart), while the follow-up, "The Hunter," peaked at 85 on the Hot 100 (#14 on the rock charts). I don't believe their lable released a third single.

Dean Daughtry and James Cobb were members of the Classics IV from the late 1960s, who with Dennis Yost as lead singer had a few big hits (Stormy, Spooky, Traces). Daughtry was also a member of the Candymen, who may have had a couple of minor hits, but were better known for being the band that backed Roy Orbison. In the early 1970's, Daughtry, Cobb, and Robert Nix from the the Candymen formed Atlanta Rhythm Section. They struggled early on, but then put a string of hits together in the late 1970's.

Danny & Dusty
From “The Lost Weekend” (1985)

One of my obscure choices. Involved members of groups from The Paisley Underground (see final part of the OTN series here)

Led by primary songwriters and singers Dan Stuart (Green on Red) and Steve “Dusty” Wynn (The Dream Syndicate), with Sid Griffin, Stephen McCarthy and Tom Stevens (The Long Ryders), Dennis Duck (Dream Syndicate) and Chris Cacavas (Green on Red). All songs on the album are originals with exception of album-closer, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”

Legend has it they wrote and recorded the entire LP in one long session in a two-day span (or thereabouts). There are some duds, but the best tracks have a rollicking, off-the-cuff, loose, at-the-pub singalong quality.

Golden Smog
Primary members have included Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Jody Stephens (Big Star), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum), Gary Louris and Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks) and Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run).

Side note: A '92 covers EP by the group is titled "On Golden Smog." That still makes me chuckle.

Wow, never heard these before the second one really has a Crowded House feel to it. Thanks for posting!

Damn, I always thought Golden Smog was just Jeff Tweedy with studio musicians when he was sick of Wilco...

Going back a few years. Super group, although maybe not recognized as such at the time.

A group that spawned other supergroups like The Faces and Humble Pie (yeah, the rules are loose), and was Steve Marriott a great lead singer or what?
