Welcome back to “On That Note,” CF’s weekly music exploration, co-hosted by @MeanDean, @cyclones500 and myself.

With the Iowa State Fair in full swing the theme this week is acts that have played the grandstand at the fair. The post after the OP will list all the acts that have played the grandstand. Again we are limiting the number of songs per artist to 2 until noon tomorrow to give the Wednesday morning people a chance.

Last Week topic: Abraham, Martin and John

My first trip to the state fair was 1975.

My brother and I, with much technical help from our father, had just completed the engine rebuild of our grandparents' former car.

Deciding on a maiden voyage we decided to camp at the state fair and catch a concert. My first 'real' concert, in fact.

We probably stayed a few too many nights (I think it was about 3 or 4 nights.

On the last night of the fair we saw Chicago perform. As their encore ended a huge storm with lightning and thunder approached. We made it to the car and onto the road before it let loose with a huge downpour.

The car did just fine. In fact, the car is still in the family. I drove it back and forth to Ames when a student at ISU for 3 years then sold it to another brother and he still has it. Same car in the same family since new in 1957.

My second state fair concert was in 1984. I was a young working engineer by then.

I can't remember the circumstances exactly but somehow my Father and his somewhat younger second wife (a child of the 50's) decided to go to the fair and she wanted to see the Everly Brothers. It was their reunion tour. Someone else was supposed to go with them as they had 3 tickets. For whatever reason the 3rd person was not able to go so they asked me, since they knew I was a music guy. So I took a day off of work and saw Don and Phil.

They did many of their classics but my favorite memory is of them doing this McCartney song that he'd written specifically for them and they released it as a single. I think it was a hit, but I don't remember for sure. I knew I liked it.

My third and final state fair concert memory was 1992.

My best friend from ISU days works at a Des Moines TV Station News Department. He, like me, is also a huge Beatles fan. When learning Ringo Starr and the All-Starr Band would be at the fair he tried his best to try to arrange an interview for the station. Alas, he could not get that done. As a consolation he did get an interview with Joe Walsh, who was in the band for that iteration. Since I was his buddy he arranged for me to be his 'sound man' and so I carried some of the equipment from the media parking area to the interview location, just inside the track fence to the east of the grandstand. The interview with Joe Walsh went fine. We could see about 25 yards away, Ringo was being interviewed by KGGO. Of course, my buddy asked again if we could interview Ringo. "No, Ringo is not doing television this tour." So we went on our way, disappointed but not surprised.

We did have press passes so I got plenty of close-up photos of Ringo and the Band. And that was it.

Until.... About 6 months later my buddy was on a random assignment and ran into one of the KGGO jocks. The guy said, "Yeah, after our interview with Ringo he looked around and asked, "Where's the TV guys?" So that was sort of an "oh, ****, SO CLOSE." thing.

Off their debut album

Not JUST because this is an awesome guitar riff

And I'll only post three from the Fading West album (I'd post the whole album, but I digress)
