On That Note: Our State Fair...

Have you ever ridden horses through a rainstorm
Or led a lion through a busy street bazaar
There are many things I'd love to turn you on to
But somehow I feel they're safer where they are.

Love Is Fair - Barbara Mandrell. This was the third single from her album of the same name. It was released in early 1981 and peaked at #13 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart. It was her ONLY single to miss the top 10 in a streak of nineteen releases from 1977 to 1984 (fourteen of which climbed into the top 5, including six #1s, during that span).

Merry Go 'Round - Kacey Musgraves. This was the lead single from her major label debut album, Same Trailer Different Park. It peaked at #10 on the Country Airplay chart in 2012. At the 56th Grammy Awards, it won for Best Country Song.

And now I'm searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
Searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
In any shooting gallery where promises are made
To rock away, rock away
Rock away, rock away
From Cullercoats and Whitley Bay
Out to rock away

The song came and went
Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
I laughed and she'd smile
It would last for awhile
You don't know what you've got till you lose it all again

Yellow sheets on a Hong Kong bed
Stazybo horn and a slingerland ride
To the carnival is what she said
A couple hundred dollars makes it dark inside
Edna million in a drop dead suit
Dutch pink on a downtown train
Two dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain

I been gettin' lonely, too much these days.
I been gettin' lonely, I guess I better get away.
But where can I go that's real? Life's a stage on a ferris wheel.
And the actors are all fighting just to see who gets the lead in the play.

It's so noisy at the fair
But all your friends are there
And the candy floss you had
And your mother and your dad.

Mary Hill used to hang out in Cherry Hill Park
The game she played lasted all day to way after dark
Now all the girls they criticized her but all the guys just idolized her
Because Mary Hill was such a thrill after dark, in Cherry Hill Park

Mary Hill loved to ride on the merry-go-round
All the guys got eager eyes watchin' Mary go around

It's gonna be good to have you back again with me
Watching the laughter play around your eyes
Come up and fetch you, saved up for the train fare money
Kiss and make up and it will be so nice

I'm just a kid, I know that it's not fair

But tell me, is this fair?

I really don't think that's fair
Boy, I'm not so dumb
