On That Note - Gr8s from the 8s - 1968

I was going to guess "Honey Pie" and/or "Wild Honey Pie".

There was a time 35 years ago I did really LIKE Rocky Raccoon, but after a while I agree it does sort of lose it's luster. For a Ringo song I can't get behind dropping Don't Pass Me By. He always got one song per album, so two on a double (DPMB and Good Night) fit. But if you're going to trim one to make it a single I would have a tough time choosing.

For a Lennon trim I offer you Glass Onion. Basically calling out Beatles lyrics/titles over a pretty ill fitting and uninspiring musical backdrop. The most interesting bit to me is the fade out.

I agree with some of that, we diverge on a couple.

"Honey Pie" I could do without, it's Paul trying covering the nostalgia path he already did well enough with "When I'm 64" then went back to well with "Your Mother Should Know." I do like the intro to Honey Pie with the scratchy-78 rpm effect on "Now she's hit the big time."

"Wild Honey Pie" is disposable, but it's so short and it's a brief, transitional throwaway, so i'd have no problem keeping it.

I think you & I discusses Don't Pass Me By a while back. I kinda like it. And I still think "Glass Onion" is cool. Keeper for me. I like the groove, and although it is just a Beatles trivia-list for most of the lyrics, it has moments that elevate it ("Looking through the bent-back tulips/To see how the other half lives")

... I guess we derailed the thread a little, didn't we? :)

I can't believe we got this far and nobody has mentioned Cheap Thrills:

I first got into Janis when I walked into a "head shop" in Des Moines in my National Guard uniform to see what those shops were like. They were playing this album and staring at me so I bought a pipe to pretend I knew what I was looking for...but I really didn't know and never used it. I did go buy the album and still have it. One of my favorites of all time.

Here is Cheap Thrills and other albums from 1968; I Didn't Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier by Eli Radish and Paul Mariat's Blooming Hits. upload_2018-6-2_15-14-11.png

Here are some more album covers from the period:

That vignette alone is awesome. ...

And it can be fascinating how a person discovers an album or song that endures for them, when not directly seeking it. I have plenty of those moments.
