On That Note: Beach Baby

Yes, I have AJA on vinyl. And??

We're gonna break out the hats and hooters
When Josie comes home
We're gonna rev up the motor scooters
When Josie comes home to stay
We're gonna park in the street
Sleep on the beach and make it
Throw down the jam till the girls say when
Lay down the law and break it
When Josie comes home

"Wish You Were Here" by Barbara Mandrell, a #2 Billboard Hot Country Singles hit from 1981. It was the follow-up single to the #1 hit "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool". "Wish" did hit #1 in Cashbox the same week her "Live" album also reached #1 on the Cashbox Country Albums chart. This is kind of a forgotten hit of hers - rarely played, rarely shows up on hit compilations. Surprising, considering how well it did.

Lyrics:
I see lovers walking on the beach at sunset
I turned to you, I guess I'm just in the habit
Ooh, baby, I wish you were here

Queen of South Beach, aging blues
Dinner's at six, wear your cement shoes
I thought you were singin' your heart out to me
Your lips were syncing and now I see

She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see"
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well have been closed

Spied a little thing and
I followed her all night
In a funky fine Levi's and her
Sweater's kind of tight
She had a west coast strut
That was sweet as molasses
But what really knocked
Me out was her cheap sunglasses
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

I got no kick against the west coast
Warner brothers are such good hosts
I raise my whiskey glass and give them a toast
I'm sure they know it's true
