Olympics - (Spoiler Alert!)

Can someone post a link to the live stream?

I can see the listing for tonight on NBC, but it's not listed as a live feed. I think they may be saving the video for their night-time broadcast.

Even the AT&T mobile video doesn't have a listing for it. Like that would do me any good, since I'm on another network, but I digress ...

Pardon my dissenting opinion, but 3 months from now, nobody outside of the DM Register will care. It's arguable that many outside of the pool of Iowans and Iowan expats really cares in the first place. It's huge IN Iowa, for now, but that makes it barely a blip on the national radar. The caucuses ended months ago, and that's really about the only time anyone outside of Iowa cares about what goes on in it.

Well that, and Cyclone athletics

Actually you are right and wrong. I think of all the olympic sports, womens gymnastics is the one people remember. But they remember the all around individual champion and not the champions of the individual events.

That beings said, she is now an olympic gold medalist, and no one can ever take that away. I could not be happier. I was really scared she would only win silvers and then you would hear about how she failed. It is an olympic medal people, it is HUGE!

I don't know why people can't just be happy for Shawn and leave it at that instead of always feeling the constant need to rip down her accomplishments. First, she's done something I'm pretty confident in saying no one on this board has ever done - won a gold and three silvers in the Olympics. So yes, she deserves all the pub that she's getting. Second, as to why Shawn's getting all the pub and Lolo's not - gymnasts have ALWAYS been more marketable than track stars. Just the way it is.

Agreed.

It's a big deal. Like it or not, Shawn Johnson winning a gold and 3 silvers is 5 times bigger than ISU winning a national championship in football (not to us but to the world). If ISU did win a national title, my guess is the Register would cover us just as much as they did Shawn.

My family visited from Southern California and just left Sunday. Some of them are former Iowans, and they couldn't get enough of Shawn. And to a person they all said the press in CA was covering her very heavily also.

Let's quit complaining about the coverage and celebrate the fact that one of our native daughters has done something spectacular. I am going to read every DMR article about her that is presented.

And I will also do the same with Lolo. She is an amazing athlete that has overcome an incredible number of obstacles to get where she is. She lived with a friend of the family for about a year and went to high school with my son. I appreciate everything she's done.

So drop the "stuff" and lets celebrate. And root for Lolo to bring the second gold medal to native Iowans in this Olympics. Has that ever been done before - two native Iowan's winning a gold medal?

If the DMR and WHO and all the media outlets were not all over this they'd be crucified.

Exactly - Shawn's now done competing, Lolo's now up, Go Lolo!

In any case, why do you have to rain on everyone else's parade. Just ignore the coverage of SJ then and pay attention to the athletes you care about.

I like to watch the local news and read the local paper. How do you suggest I ignore the coverage?

As far as raining on everyone else's parade, you can just ignore my messages.

Once again, what she did in the Olympics is great. I just think the coverage is a little over the top when we have other Olympians from Iowa who don't get half the lovefest.

Calm down there, buddy. Shawn's been competing since day one (practically). Lolo's run one qualifying race so far. Attention should begin shifting now that Shawn's done and others are now up.

I'm not sure we have that many with such a list of international accomplishments.

It's awful hard to ignore. DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register | Des Moines news, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving Des Moines, Iowa All SJ all the time. She's freaking everywhere. It's very very annoying.

I think everyone is happy for her. I'm very happy for her, and proud she's an Iowan. We are all just annoyed with the hype.

I think the register is just overcompensating for not covering the Masters that Zach Johnson won.

Well there is certainly some of that. Kerri Strug was very popular for a month or two after Atlanta, but it's not like Tuscon is somehow on the map now because she's from there.

Other Olympians going for ONE medal...

Also, Lolo didn't get as much hype pre-Olympics but she definitely is getting it now.

Gymnastics has also been one of the headlining events so that makes SJ an even bigger deal. Plus the fact that its summer still, what else do you want them to talk about?

Probably because those other Iowans weren't as accomplished and expected to do much. As far as Lolo she has a chance at one medal and Shawn had a chance and got multiple medals. So just do the the vloume of events they participate in there is going to be more coverage of Shawn because she competed more.

Oh, I don't know. The impending world food crisis and the debatable effect of biofuels on it would be a start. Maybe they could have covered the stuff going on over in Iowa city. Football season getting ready to start up. Kids going back to school. Cleanup from the record flooding. Even covering the olympics, how about some reasonable journalism about China? There's a little presidential election coming up, and I haven't seen any definitive articles about the candidates policies and how they affect Iowans either.

The Register is nothing more than a USA today that panders to Iowans. The local news outlets aren't any better.

Count me as one of the few Iowan's that is sick of this story. I'm happy she has done good and it's not her fault that she get's all the coverage but I'd much rather hear about Lolo.

Just a few reasons:

#1 For the last month, all we've heard about is SJ. It's like she is the greatest olympian of all time before she even went.

#2 Because of all this coverage I think a lot of people just assumed that she would win gold in every event. When that didn't happen they started making excuses like "China is using 10 year olds", "The judges don't like SJ's style", etc.

#3 I've heard co-workers say things like "They should raise money for the family since they are really struggling and they have a 3rd mortgage on their house". This makes me want to puke.SJ is going to make millions but it was Lolo who donated money to the flood victims. It's hard to feel bad for a 16 year old driving a Land Rover. Lolo has had a lot more interesting and tough life but there are 10 stories about SJ for every one about Lolo.

Once again, I have nothing against SJ but the crush that WHO-TV and the DM register have is on the verge of sickening.

OK, I know you are saying you don't, but get over your jealousy, hatred, or whatever your problem with her is. She is a 16 year old that spent her whole life preparing for this. She is an amateur athlete that has represented her state, and country about as well as possible. I'm sure she wasn't calling WHO every day and asking them to cover her.

Also,
I have never heard anyone say the Chinese gymnasts were 10, nice exaggeration. It was pretty clear that China stretched the rules a little on who and how old at least two of their team gymnasts were.

It is not true that the Olympic judges did not like her style. It was apparent though, that they did penalize her for her body type. She benefited from consistency during the last four years, but the judges liked the fluid, lankier style of Nas and a few others better. When those girls didn't make errors, it negated SJ's consistent, mechanical style.

It was great that Lolo had enough sponsership to be in a position to donate money. Maybe when SJ and family returns they will be able to help many people. I'm sure if she does, it won't just be financial. Either way, it is her choice and not something that she has to do. That is the whole point about giving.

She was the most gracious non-gold winner from any country in gymnastics, hands down! I'm proud of how she performed, and represented her State and Country. If the coverage on the local news or paper gets to be too much for me, I turn the channel, or don't read the article.

I still find it humerous that people think this is a big deal only to the local media, and somehow it's WHO or the register who are making this a big deal. I live 700 miles from des moines, and when I go to cnnsi.com, she's there on the front page. Espn.com, article link and picture on the front page. Turn on the denver news... shawn johnson. Heck, there was even a 20 minute special on her they showed on my flight from LA to Denver a few weeks ago. Last week, my wife picks up a people magazine in the airport with Brad and Angelinas twins on the cover, and there at the top of the same cover is shawn johnsons name with a 5 page article inside about her, her studio and her hometown. She's a big story. She was already decorated with accomplishments before the olympics, and now she's a 4 medal winner. If you can't handle big news, or someone elses success that's fine, but don't blame the local media for covering a story that's huge all over the nation.

I agree that Lolo is a great story and isnt getting the nationwide attention she deserves, but don't belittle the greatness of the other story.
