Colombia has clearly outplayed the U.S. in this match, but now they are falling on the ground at every opportunity to kill the match.

After watching last nights games. I have come to the conclusion. US soccer has to change the rules of soccer in the US. It needs to break ties with the MLS, open up competition and attempt to create a system similar to Europe. If the US truly wants to compete at the next level we can't continue to allow our 18 - 23 year old talent to squander in poor developmental league like the MLS or in the restrictive nature of the NCAA.

I am convinced we have the athletes to compete with the world's best, but we lose to many of them to underwhelming development, right at the age when they need the most playing time they can get, they get that taken away from them. That Colombian team was so superior to the US even the U-23s not involved wouldn't have helped changed the end result. I get the the olympics and U-23 isn't all the important. But considering we are nation of 300+ million people we should be able to compete with any team at any level.

No one is forced to go to college or the MLS. These guys could go play for the same clubs that the Colombians are playing for if that's how it worked out. Americans don't like to leave America, it's somewhat pleasant here.

The ramp up for Copa America isn't too far off. The US will have 3 friendlies before the tournament starts:

Sunday, May 22 vs. Puerto Rico in PR
Wednesday, May 25 vs. Ecuador in Frisco, TX
Saturday, May 28 vs. Bolivia in KC

The Puerto Rico friendly will involve foreign-based US players (including some guys who aren't even on the pre-tournament 40-man roster) since the MLS guys will not be released until later. Just in case anybody hasn't seen the 40 names on the preliminary roster:

United States (provisional)
Goalkeepers: David Bingham (San Jose Earthquakes), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Ethan Horvath (Molde), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Defenders: Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Ventura Alvarado (Club America), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Monterrey), Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Omar Gonzalez (Pachuca), Eric Lichaj (Nottingham Forest), Matt Miazga (Chelsea FC), Michael Orozco (Club Tijuana), Tim Ream (Fulham), DeAndre Yedlin (Sunderland)

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (FC Nantes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Mix Diskerud (New York City FC), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Jermaine Jones (Colorado Rapids), Perry Kitchen (Heart of Midlothian), Alfredo Morales (Ingolstadt), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution), Danny Williams (Reading FC), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Ethan Finlay (Columbus Crew), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Bobby Wood (Union Berlin), Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy)

Oh, and guess who's hurt again?
