***Official portal tracker thread***

Please stop the nasty banter.

WELCOME JAMAL!! You have made a great decision.

This young man has a confirmed 10.8 or 10.81 100 meters as a JUNIOR. He would
have been one of our fastest players in 2025. I am watching Oregon destroy Tech with quick twitch athletes. WELCOME JAMAL!!!!!!!!

He’s ranked higher than Eskildsen was and has almost identical measurables to Noel

You wouldn't have your new players until the summer. You would eliminate spring practice.
But what if the portal didn't open until after spring practice?

A big problem with college sports is the calendar.
  • Schools are firing coaches week 4 because they want their new coach hired to recruit for Dec signing day.
  • HS kids can sign and then their coach leaves to take new job.
  • Players agents & family are having conversations with new schools while games are still being played. And before portal opens.
Create a logical sequence.
  1. New coach can't be hired until Dec 15.
  2. Go back to a single early Feb signing date for HS players.
  3. Have a single portal period after spring practice. Something like April 10-30.
Sure portal kids miss spring practice, but players are on campus all summer. Maybe the NCAA allows pro-style OTA's during the summer before Aug 1 fall practice.

You wouldn't eliminate Spring practice. It would be the same as it always was. You would have players who want to play at Iowa State. It's asinine for an 8 win team to not have a bowl game because we only have 17 players on the roster.
Except Iowa State would only have about 40 players available for spring practice. Because any transfers would not be on campus.

Why would any player who is entering the portal practice with a team they are leaving? Why would coaches want to have players they know are leaving practice with the team?

Most of whom have already announced.
The panic will set in if/when it takes a few days for the dust to clear and an actual roster get filled.

People need to look at this like pro-league free agency. Big names, getting big money will sign early. Players focused on 1 school will sign early.

But after that it will be a process. There could be good value week 3, week 4 of the portal.

Yeah, you can’t pull scholarships or those type of things. I can see pushing them out of facilities to a point because you don’t want them around players that may not have decided to stay and bring in their ear. I can go back and forth on the facilities.

An employee who quits turns in their keys/access badge.

Should be no different for players. Once they've announced an intent to leave, they can find somewhere else to train for their next job.

You still have to have a valid transcript to move between schools in the portal. There is nothing wrong with slowing this process down with final release of players to their new schools in May in my mind. The January portal shouldn't exist if it is only there to facilitate spring football practice.

Nobody is saying they have to practice in the spring with a team they are leaving.

I'm just saying, players who are leaving wouldn't practice, coaches wouldn't want them to. Coaches will want as many people enrolling early or transferring for spring semester.

If it was a rule everyone had to follow, it might even the playing field. Could start fall practice earlier, but I doubt coaches love that either.

I guess my point is that if those were the rules this year, spring practice for Iowa State would be pointless, with 20 or 30 players on the team. Could do drills, but probably no scrimmaging.

I see NIL Value's are popping up on ON3.
Can someone please explain how these are arrived at?
Are they what they were offered? Valued?
Sort of seems arbitrary.

If the portal didn't open until after spring practice, all 2025 roster players would be still on Iowa State campus going to class, attending S&C and spring practice under Jimmy Rogers.

Take the emotion & urgency out of the equation for kids to enter the portal on Jan 2. Let kids experience a new staff or see where they fit on the depth chart. Even if they are at a school that doesn't go through a coaching change.

Comparing college & NFL is often apples to oranges. But from a calendar and not creating conflicting priorities, colleges could learn from the NFL.

And yes, having a CBA and a powerful single Commissioner does help.
