***Official portal tracker thread***

I think people are going to be disappointed in what retention looks like for the Iowa States of the world with revenue sharing and NIL on top.

Any guy who is talented with an agent is going to be able to get PAID in the portal and there isn't a damn thing anyone outside the B10 or SEC can do about it in a lot of cases.

Campbell for example knows what every single guy was being paid. He can offer significant raises ISU can't compete with but he has PLENTY more to go around. Instant culture building with guys he has great evaluations on.

The coaches know what they’re doing.
This isn’t their first rodeo. Unlike fans they probably knew who would be out there months ago as I’m sure agents are constantly reaching out.

It sucks as we lose guys we know and have trust in…but it’s not like we had the market cornered on top players under MC.

If you asked 49er fans 4 years ago how they’d feel about losing Trey Lance and having a guy named Brock Purdy as QB1 they’d have lost their ****!

‘We won’t win 5 games with…what’s his ******* name???? Brad Paisley?’

A ton of how good a FB team is lies in grit and determination…work ethic and attitude.

You think this man recruits quitters? Lol
His Wazzu team finished out the season strong.

Dan McCarney took over a hard job. No resources or facilities and a program that hadn't been to a bowl since Jesus was still working construction.

PR had it a little better and investments were made to bring us up to speed. We had an admin that wanted to win.

Honestly…f Gene Chizik.

But Campbell took over a program way better than Danny Mac did. Tons more facilities and investments…better tv coverage.

Yes he did a lot…but a lot is discounted about the efforts of Mac, CPR, and the investment of the University for really the first time in forever.

Campbell did give us a winners attitude though…for the first time in my 54 years I wasn’t sure any game we needed to win wasn’t going to end up in disappointment.

And as others pointed out…we didn’t play UT, OU, a still strong NE, or A&M.

I think DM & PR would have been tremendously more successful if they came in the situation MC did,
All really good points and I agree with the majority of it. Players don't care about facilities and tv coverage anymore. It's about money and the coach. CMC kept our guys from taking more money elsewhere to play for him. That doesn't happen in college football anymore. McCarney and Rhoads never had to deal with developing athletes just to have them walk out the door when a better offer comes in.

Who are we adding that won't replace what we lost?
My biggest concern is that IOWA State will only have 10 or so Iowa players on the team next year. We had made big inroads in gaining fans in the state and getting better Iowa players the last 6 years. I'm worried that now we might as well concede all the best Iowa players to the hawks or someone else for the next several years.

PR was an idiot.

Yea, it's going to be hard. But good thing coaching matters. Look at how much more money Iowa's Athletics Department has than Iowa State. But we have probably won as many or more Cy-Hawks over the last 5 years.

Its tough, because teams like PSU have 2x plus $ dedicated to buying football players. Campbell could allocate $8M to his QB room and still have $22M for the rest of his roster. Iowa State could spend $2M on the QB room and only have $12M left.

Schools like Iowa State and coaches like Jimmy Rogers will need to take a different path to winning. It won't be about WINNING the portal money battles.

It's going to be about "Moneyball", building a roster and player effort.

I get what you’re trying to say but CMC beat OU and Texas several times. Including 3 in a row over Texas and winning @OU. The 10 team league was also tougher than the old Big 12 north. Last 3 years you are correct after OU and Texas left.

Texas wasn’t really good until last year.

But I agree.

Not this again. So you think a coach who recruited Iowa heavily up until last year going to WSU all of a sudden will forget his contacts and where schools are?

Exactly and it's what makes this job and other mid-level jobs so hard to be consistent at. We can find success picking off talented D2 players. It's going to be hard putting a playoff level team on the field like that tho.

Jimmy must have made a really bad first impression when he met on the Friday before break.

We should be able to save some money on our NIL because I don’t think we will be able to fill all 85 roster spots.
I’m not quite ready to jump to this conclusion yet, but speculation about this will understandably ramp up after Jan 2 if we don’t land some good talent in the portal.

It’s not surprise a lot of our best players - particularly the upper classmen - are following CMC to Penn State. I think unfair to Rogers to somehow make that a reflection on him.

Where this gets interesting is with someone like Manske who - by most accounts here - was above Moberly in the depth charts. If that is indeed the case he is - at least at the moment - our starting QB next year.
