***Official FIFA World Cup 2018 Thread***

I think Russia wins the shootout.

1. Russia at home with Home crowd
2. Pressure for Spain will be immense.
3. Spain GK is iffy.

It paid off for Russia

Of course it did, that's why they played that way. If they would have tried to play an open game against Spain they probably would have been sliced to ribbons. I'm just making the point that saying that Spain looked like trash had more to do with Russia's desire to make the game a **** show than an inherent lack of talent from the Spaniards.

Exactly, if anyone watched Spain vs Portugal or Spain vs Monacco in the group stages they would see Spain isn’t boring.

USMNT used similar tactics pre-Klinsmann. It's how we upset Spain and nearly upset Brazil in the 2009 Confed Cup. If your team's defense and goaltending are good enough, it's an equalizer and you hope you catch the other team sleeping on a counter attack.

A rainy day doesn't hurt this approach at all either. It wasn't that shocking of a result other than the brands and FIFA rankings.

In the darkest depths of ISU football struggles nothing would make me more optimistic than lousy weather. Unlike last season where I felt excited to just line them up and see who could make the better plays.

The home advantage for hosts can be pretty palpable with some exceptions obviously. Korea was ranked 41st when they hosted and made it to the semis, not much higher than Russia is currently ranked.

Croatia’s population is comparable to Iowa’s. Some insane per capita success in FIFA and FIBA.

Been a pretty good tourney overall but today has been a pretty dull watch.

Holy ****.. what a finish. How the hell was that not a red card?
