*** Official Eastern Illinois vs #4 IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

I don't know if it was mentioned earlier in this thread, and maybe it was, but in no way should Batemon be taking 8 3's in any game this season. His shot selection was very poor yesterday. I hope he realizes it, and I'm sure the coaches will mention it in the video room this week. But bad shot selection will cost him minutes in Big 12 play. We want Milan taking 8 3's.

I would have to go back and rewatch, but most of those were really good looks. Hear what you're saying about Milan, but suspect a good number of these were not at his expense.

1-8 is obviously not a good look. And particularly discouraging after the shooting performance against Alcorn State.

I agree, there were a few that were good looks, step in 3's from a kick out pass. But at least 3 were taken way too early (5-7 seconds) into a possession. And two of the misses lead to fast break points the other way. Wide open 3, and a dunk or lay up the other way.

That early in the shot clock I agree is not good. Maybe if you've knocked a couple of down, but not if you're struggling.

Would like to see him be able to put the ball on the floor and go create something or get to the line. He is too athletic to just hunt 3 point shots.

I disagree, up until this game Batemon was shooting at 47% from 3pt and even after this game he is 39%. From all accounts in the preseason. Batemon was labeled as one of our potential shooters and was brought in as someone that can hit 3's at a successful clip as a freshman.

Early in the season he was one of the few guys that was hitting on their 3's whenever one else was struggling and often was the guy that broke the seal on the 3-point shooting.

If anything, I want him working on his game vs trash opponents so that when conference play starts, he has the confidence of coming off the bench and hitting a few 3's.

In post game Batemon talked just about this, how the staff wants him developing his game beyond just 3 point shooting in these tune up games like EIU. He had a rough game, but game minutes is more valuable than practice. I also think Batemon gets his shot off a little bit faster than Milan.

I'm guessing it was part of a plan to get him some work since he didn't play much the previous two games.

If he hits 3-4, which he's capable of, 8 is fine imo.

Agree. I think Batemon is a sharpshooter and is being told (and given the green light) to take all of those shots. I hope we can get back to shooting a better % though.

Most of Batemon’s shots were open threes. There were a couple where he was too aggressive but overall on the season he’s usually taking shots within the flow of the offense, or in garbage time against bad teams. And you know the staff is telling a top-50 recruit that made 15 threes in a half to shoot if he’s open.

The greater concern in my mind is Nelson. The kid has almost no feel for the intricacies of the game. He is all attack, all the time and it’s the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. The ball usually sticks with him in the halfcourt and contributes to in effect killing a possession. And you know it’s going up if he’s on a fast break. I couldn’t believe it when he passed the ball on a fast break yesterday because it’s so seldom the ball leaves his hands once he has it. He’s another non-take in my mind like Mulder, but it’s a lot more about his brain than his physics. That can improve fortunately.

I'm convinced a certain segment of our fanbase don't know how to get joy out of watching ISU sports.

I swear constant access to metrics and mass-watching other games or scores has turned everything into some displacement from reality.

Include NIL in that.

Actual multi-year contracted veteran pros have bad or off games all the time but let's expect a bunch of college kids to operate in only one way.

Good game for him to get some shots in. Most were decent looks. I for one love that he’s not afraid to chuck it up. Shoot the rock young man! TJ will reign him in if needed

Agreed, Batemon is a gifted shooter, and shots that look bad for most can still be good shots for him.

His scouting report says he "makes em in bunches" so sure he'll be streaky like Milan and Curt, but he was recruited to shoot for volume.
He projected as a starter over the summer and him stepping into his potential this year is probably the single biggest step rn this team could take toward reaching its ceiling.

I wanna see 20min+ and 6+ shots in all these buy games
