***Official 2026 World Cup Thread***

I get that they’re working on sportsmanship and stuff said on the pitch is a problem. But this feels like a yellow at most for that. I guess I wonder if he said what he said without covering his mouth, is that still a red card?

This certainly changes things. What even was that?
I’m starting to think it’s not going to make much difference. Both of these teams suck, and Paraguay has packed it in since their goal. The only “offense” they’ve had since then have been on clear outs. Would have been two-line passes in hockey.

But would they issue a red card if they say the racist and discriminatory stuff without covering their mouth?
Yep. I'm pretty sure they are supposed to crack down on that pretty hard from what I've heard. I guess the covering of the mouth is a dead giveaway of that type of behavior and was well documented to players beforehand.

They’re supposed to. But the on field ref isn’t keeping control. It took VAR to catch that. VAR isn’t catching what is said by players, only physical acts.

Past cups you could see the difference in the play of the top teams vs USA even in the group stage. Just looked like we were winning on athleticism vs skill. We look like we can compete with the top skill this time.
We are definitely closing the gap. We're not at the top level yet, because we still have gaps defensively and the better teams will likely exploit our weaknesses and lack of consistency.

We're at our best when we play aggressively, but IMO, a team like France or England can counter us and will give us fits.

The nice thing is we're at home and are playing with confidence. And, since we just have to be better in one game, we're proving that we are very capable of holding our own and upsetting a more proven team on a given day.

Fun times. I'm enjoying the hell outta this ride.

Red card for covering your mouth is too harsh. Just like incidental targeting in football.
But it's not just covering the mouth. They determined that the only reason players were covering their mouths were so they couldn't get caught on video saying some really inappropriate stuff that was already red card worthy.

They weren't covering their mouths and talking about what's new on Netflix.

Honestly don't follow the team too much outside of watching all the games but I've noticed the touch, build up and goal scoring chances look well above what we have been. Typical casual sports fan of me not to pay attention to the D. Also haven't had to see much D thus far.
