***Official 2026 NCAA Tournament Thread***

My BIL who is a huge Hawkeye fan and is very outspoken about his disinterest and almost compete disdain for men's college basketball greeted me with a good morning text yesterday sarcastically apologizing that Iowa State lost and assured me that it will be big brother Iowa once again carrying the state and representing it better on a national level.

This guy hadn't watched one second of college basketball all season by his own admission. But was probably "locked in" after Florida. And people act surprised when I speak out about my dislike of Iowa.

Yes, of course now tell the rest of the story… I always find it interesting how people forget the antagonizing way they treated said fan…

And you only have to read on this board for a little while to know what’s been happening the other way around.

That’s what drives me nuts about Iowa fans. They wander around talking **** about Iowa State fans when they have been equally trading bars just like you guys have been with Iowa fans.

Not everyone in these fan bases are like that.

I find it a challenge sometimes to watch a (non-ISU) game unless (1) I like one of the teams far more than the other or (2) I despise one of them (even if I'm non-committal about the opponent).

Duke-UConn is an example of that situation.
Yeah, I despise them both. If I were watching any basketball this weekend, I'd probably tune in for the 2nd half if it's close.

I am not really an in your face type of fan towards him or any other Iowa fans. I get a subtle jab in every now and then like any good rival fan should, but I'd never go out of my way to text him or anyone else I know like that after a big loss in a sport I don't even follow. I don't think many Iowa State fans are really in your face fans. We have our Twitter warriors like any fanbase, but in all I think we're pretty docile to your face

Let’s set the record straight here. I don’t hang out in Iowa all that often and I don’t trade barbs with rival fans… But my friends that live in Iowa routinely tell me stories about their Iowa State friends throwing **** their way…

So I’m not sure who you’re trying to convince that these awful Iowa fans are worse than the awful Iowa State fans but that’s what I like to call a “mind game“ you’re only tricking yourself. Just like they are…

My uncle has a core group of high school and college friends 10 or 12 and we are from southeastern Iowa. 4 or five of them are Iowa State fans the rest Iowa fans and they get together at least twice a year to golf play cards, etc. in a big group… They don’t have these kind of problems.

Probably says as much about you as them

Look, I’m not trying to be a **** to you, but that is completely made up. Lots and lots and lots of Iowa State fans are in your face fans… You can honestly tell on here the vitriol and nastiness can’t help but bleed through…

PS…. if a fan doesn’t even care all that much about men’s basketball but suddenly decides to take a jab at said Iowa State fan. It’s more than likely because that Iowa State fan has been giving them grief for 5 to 10 years about how piss poor their basketball program is… I honestly can’t believe grown men and women struggle comprehending this concept.

I clearly can’t speak for all Iowa fans and I am that fan that hasn’t watched a ton of men’s basketball the last couple years, but I can’t imagine any of them being anything but happy and joyful about their season.

And you guys would prefer they are miserable. It’s really ****** if you think about it.

Exactly why ISU should have beaten them without Jefferson. Or at the very least act made it competitive.

Well, I’ve gotten pretty soft in my fandom over the years… **** happens. Yes I believ d Iowa State was a much better team and I’m literally shocked they lost. But some teams get on a roll and some teams get in their head and it happens.

Agreed. I'm not shocked they lost. It was apparent as the season went on we were more like a top 20 team.

I don't dislike UCONN like I do the traditional blue bloods though. I remember when they made their first run in 1990 so I appreciate how far that program has come.

Good outlook…. I don’t care for them and that used to be an over the top distain… But it is very difficult not to appreciate what they’ve done over multiple years with multiple coaches. Same with their basketball program I don’t care for Geno but how in the hell do you not be in awe of what he has accomplished?

I think Nick Saban is what truly changed me… I spent all kinds of time loathing, the SEC & Alabama in particular and then about eight years ago. I finally said holy **** Cuad that guy continually turns over his staff and just continually wins. You look like an idiot constantly pissed off about it…

And I have to tell you, Iowa State has never ever held that kind of disdain for me so it’s a little surprising for me to see it in either one of our fan bases. We are in different conferences and we have pretty much proven. Both teams can be successful at the same time… I really honestly don’t get it.

Blaylock was young. Tim Barnes flunking out of school was probably the difference that year in making the tournament. He may have been the quickest player in ISU history.

“Flunking” out of school…. is that even a thing anymore… Think about it, when’s the last time you heard about somebody losing eligibility because of grades. I don’t think half these kids even go to school anymore.

Iowa and Iowa State both regularly lost kids to academic casualties. I literally don’t remember the last time Iowa had one.

PS… See these are the kind of interesting conversations that I feel like message boards should be for… Finding out about your team, finding out about someone else’s team, some light ribbing, informational, witty, humorous, anecdotes, etc.

I get this take and I think I probably used to be like that… Oddly enough, now I often times enjoy watching a game where I have zero rooting interest. I can just enjoy the purity of the sport and I find it refreshing.

Now I will tell you something comical about me… Not that you care… But I can be watching a game without any rooting interest whatsoever and for whatever reason something happens during the game that irritates me and I’m suddenly all in on the other team, lol.

I’ve even switched allegiance’s in the middle of a game lol

Cyclone fans aren’t front runners and choose to only show up for our team when we are having success. This allows us to be able to talk a lil smack

No…. you cannot in any way, shape or form speak for all Iowa State fans. You have casuals as well. That front runner stuff is idiotic fan rhetoric. Not Iowa State fans not Iowa fans, all fans…. It’s something they tell themselves to feel better about their obsession.

When I went to ISU all you had to do was go to class and you'd pass if you were an athlete. Didn't matter what you did on tests or anything. I mean they would basically get the test in their "study sessions". If you couldn't even pretend to care you would flunk out
