Iowa doesn't match up with anyone honestly. He scraped this team together in year 1 just to be competitive and ends up in the elite 8. Nuts
They can match up because they play at a slow pace allowing them to get quality shots. Tonight was their lowest perceive shooting of their four games at 37%. When you play a slow pace game you have shoot the ball at a high percentage, at least around 50%, tonight they didn't do that and it was the difference. Look at their percentages from their past two games, against Florida and Nebraska, over 50%.

Illinois is in the Final Four for the first time since 2005 and the 5th time overall. They are 1-4 in the National Semifinals. Their only win in the National Semifinals was in 2005 vs Louisville.
Whatever happened to that guy that coached Illinois in ‘05? Weber mighta been his name?

Heh. And I’m not really mocking Bruce Weber. He seemed like a legitimately good guy.

My point, if there is one, is that while tournament success is a huge part of how a coach is judged it usually takes sustained success to keep a power conference job.

TJ has led the most successful run in Cyclone history. Larry’s Elite 8 doesn’t hold a candle to it.

McCollum is a phenomenal coach, but Stirtz will not be easily replaced. He may never find another point guard this good unless he’s able to leverage his success into some huge recruits or transfers. Curious to see how they do without him because the rest of the team isn’t all that impressive.
Stirtz is good, but seeing him this year and last, it’s pretty amazing just how good. He played 40 minutes, how many games in a row and controls everything. Not sure I’ve seen anyone more valuable to his team the last 2 years. Long way of saying, highly unlikely they get anyone close to that level. The bar has been set by McCollum. Can be a blessing and a curse with that fan base.

Same could be said with ISU and Jefferson and Lipsey. How the **** do you know they won't get a good mid major guard. I know all year how good you thought Stirtz was lol
I mean TJ is a very proven P5 recruiter. It's a very fair question on how McCollum will recruit at this level

How many players followed him from Drake? That's not scraping. It also helps to have a point guard who has followed him for how many years?

With that said, good season. A bit of a charmed run in the tourney. How?

Clemson......not a real good team that wasn't 100% healthy. Doesn't matter Iowa took care of them.

Florida......should never have been a one seed but doesn't matter still a very good team and probably beats Iowa 8 of 10 times. However, to their credit Iowa kept it close and won it at the end. Good win.

Nebraska and Illinois...............you have to be kidding me. Two teams from your conference that takes no prep. You beat Nebby in January or February.........good win. In the tourney, it's headlines. Why, sweet sixteen. Finally ran into an Illinois team that just had too much.

In a one off anything can happen. They made the best of what was handed to them.

Wins over Elite 8 teams:

Cyclones: 2
Hawkeyes: 0

Wins over Sweet 16 teams:

Cyclones: 4
Hawkeyes: 1

Wins over in-state rivals:

Cyclones: 1
Hawkeyes: 0

I’m interested to see the post-tournament AP poll. My guess is ISU stays in the top 10 and Iowa is slotted in somewhere between 15 and 20, though that seems high based on resume.
