***Official 2025 Weather Thread***

I hate sirens. No reason to sound them in Huxley. The cry wolf mentality is very real and we're desensitizing people to a real threat by sounding them when there isn't one.

Heard they also went in Ankeny too.

My Unpopular Opinion is that all sirens should go away. I despise them. The only way I'd get behind keeping them is if there was a uniform reason for sounding for all communities in the entire state *and* they're geolocated/automatic.

Had to dust off the cobwebs on the ol' profile there. :)
Sirens can definitely cause more confusion than they help.

There were a good amount of people in Joplin who stopped taking cover when they sirens stopped. But they had only turned off because they had been hit.

I've heard meteorologists like James Spann argue they are only for people who are outside. Basically they are 1930s air raid technology that no one should really upon as their first line of alert. They only exist for people who have missed every other warning, but many people don't treat it like that.

Anyone else seeing the dramatic increase in mosquitoes in the past week? Mowing a neighbor's yard yesterday. I was literally swarmed by them. Came home and had over 20 bites on my arms and back of my neck.

REALLY bad in my Twin Cities metro yard. Spray up and keep moving it's okay but stand still and they are nasty even if sprayed but with DEET.

We have gotten 4, 1.5, 1.5 , 2.5 inches in a week. And my pond in the yard turned into a lake with last nights 2.5. This is getting ridiculous.

So, how is all of this crazy stormy and intense rain and stupid dew points impacting RAGBRAI? Just seems like a **** week for it so far.
I think Milford, Day 1, may have had a little rain. Otherwise, it has been dry and hot. Bikers have commented that the breeze feels like a furnace blowing on their face.

15-20mph headwind basically all day today (Forest City to Iowa Falls), on top of the 95+ heat index. No thank you.
