Might as well. 1-2 inches is enough to close school these days. Almost 100% of getting at least that.

my buddy and i were just talking about how it was VERY rare for school to be cancelled the night before back in the days of my high school years (07-10) and that wasn't even that long ago.

KCCI has 11 schools already listed as closing either activities tonight or in the morning, and Ames has been moved into the 6 to 9 inch range of snow. Going to be using the snow blower in the morning. At least now its all on concrete and do not have to worry about throwing rocks like in the past.

Schools are afraid of getting sued so they cancel classes a lot earlier and many of the rural districts have merged so the kids and teachers are traveling a lot further than what they did even 15 years ago. Its also gives the parents more time to line up child care for tomorrow if they know tonight.

Also, an earlier announcement makes it easier for parents to arrange childcare if necessary. As dual income and single parent households have increased, this probably becomes more and more of a factor
