my buddy and i were just talking about how it was VERY rare for school to be cancelled the night before back in the days of my high school years (07-10) and that wasn't even that long ago.
I don't think it happens that often these days either. I can only remember it happening a few times since I've had kids, and it's a pain in the ass not knowing what the morning routine is going to be when you go to bed. I remember it happening a few times when I was a kid, and one time it was a total bust and all we got was some flurries.

I wonder what schools will do if we have a winter like those years? 2008 and 2010 were nasty winters with snow every week, even multiple times a week. A winter like those probably means 20-30 snow days in a school year.

Canceling school the day before is a common occurrence these day, most don't do it this early, they wait till after seven or so.
Hell I am so old, we hardly ever cancelled school, buses had CB radios as the only means to try and talk to them. I remember once we were on the bus, and a high school kid that we were picking up, came out of her home and told the bus driver that school had just been cancelled, they heard it the radio, driver turned around and took the few of us on the bus back home. Oh the good old days.

Most schools have 4/5 built in snow days in their schedule, if they run over that amount they start taking days off spring or easter break. If they have too, some go to having classes on Saturday. If its really bad, schools will ask the state to lower the number of contact days that they have for the year. Some even extend the school year by adding days onto the end.

Seems like the Des Moines NWS updated their forecast to favor a more northern track. It doesn’t look like they boosted the totals for DSM, but it does look like far southeast Iowa got lowered from 6-8 down to 4-6.

Just saw that. Central Iowa getting the load of it.

We're just getting old. I graduated HS in 07, that's almost 20 years ago..

So about my 11 AM flight to Florida from DSM tomorrow...
DH is supposed to fly into DSM mid-afternoon from San Antonio. If that happens, I think he'll stay the night in Des Moines.
