I think that's a big reason. But some years are just like that. We all remember the big upsets, but most tournaments don't have more than 2 or 3 of them.

No this one is unique. Fewest upsets since the tournament expanded to 64. Has to be a record number of blowouts too.

I love upsets as much as the next guy, but the lack of upsets usually make better games for the 2nd round.

Yeah, this seems like the most boring opening round I can remember. Not only a lack of big upsets, but a lack of close games in general.
