*** Official 2025 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Only one of the runs were earned and his SO//BB is 3.00
Oh he's always been able to strike guys out. But for a guy who throws 100mph, he's too hittable and wild. His history is a WHIP of 1.5+. I got too many grey hairs already for a reliever with that pedigree.

Until he can perform in DSM over a couple months, he should stay in DSM.

It was interesting they brought up Roberts. But last I looked, Jordan Wicks hasn't been pitching well with the I-Cubs. In more limited innings, neither has Palencia or Killian.

I didn't realize Keagan Thompson is with the I-Cubs. But not on 40-man roster

I knew Thompson was DFA before the Japan trip but yes I also did not realize he stayed in the Cubs organization. Maybe he pitches well enough to get back on the 40 man at some point but I would guess if he gets another chance in Chicago he's going to have to pitch well enough to stick around else he will be DFA once again when there is a roster crunch. At times he's looked really good but between sometimes hurt and terribly inconsistent he ran out of chances and they had no choice without minor league options left.

I took a look at the I-Cubs stats so far and I agree, Wicks is going to need to pitch better before he gets another chance in Chicago. Really would not hurt my feelings if they included him in a trade at some point as I don't think he's ever going to be much more than a fringe 5th starter type of guy if he can stay healthy. As far as pitching at Iowa goes Chris Flexen is a guy to keep an eye on because he probably has some kind of opt out in his contract at some point so if he keeps pitching well would not be surprised if he opts out to find a better situation if he's not called up by then. That was the same issue they had with Keller who they added to the 40 man to start the season. Keller apparently had an earlier opt out and he pitched well enough in spring training they didn't want to risk losing him. So far I think that was the right move, he's pitched about as well as anyone in the pen so far and is someone that can throw more than 1 inning too.

For other pitchers on the 40 man Palencia and Little will likely be the next arms up in the bullpen at some point. Both have a lot of upside if they can stay healthy and locate their pitches consistently. Horton should be up at some point but there is no rush as need to make sure he stays healthy and is dominating the AAA level to the point where he's not being challenged anymore.

Interesting thing right now about the I Cubs is everyone is hitting except the top prospects. It’s early and most of those guys haven’t experienced an Iowa April.

Heard Caissie sprained an ankle. Yes Alcantara has been cold but Triantos, Cowles, and Ballesteros are all hitting fairly well. I'm not too concerned with position players at the moment because unless there is an injury there is not a guy in Iowa right now that is going to take a starting spot from anyone in Chicago. The 2 guys that are probably the most ready are Alcantara and Caissie but there is no room for them in the OF right now.

The next logical call-up is Brujan. Then the question to me is do they keep a 35yo Berti who can help today or a 25yo Workman who might have value down the line.

But the reality, none are probably no more than utility guys. Or insurance if Shaw is sent down after 30/60 days in Chicago.

I thought Brujan was still injured? I think Berti stays as a utility guy all year just due to his speed and baserunning ability.

The way the offense has been hitting there really no need to make any roster moves with position players unless there is an injury. Going to be interesting to see what they do with Workman, only 6 AB so far and can't be optioned to Iowa but I don't think Brujan really adds anything either whenever he is healthy again. He'll probably get stashed in Iowa on a rehab assignment until they have to make a decision on him and Workman as they can't keep both on the roster without sending someone else down.

Shaw's .170 batting average doesn't look great so far but he has a .316 OBP as he's taken the 3rd most walks on the team so far so he's had a good approach at the plate. He's going to get some runway for now especially since we really don't have any better options at 3B.

They're keeping Berti. My guess is Workman is offered back to the Tigers and we never really hear from him again.

Welp, have nothing to show for trading Bryant now after both Canario and Kilian have been DFA

Nothing to show for it except that we didn’t get on the hook for some 7 year, $200 million thing. It amazes me how far and fast Bryant, Rizzo and Baez fell off. Pandemic saved us from a giant Baez extension that the Tigers are saddled with.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers was on ESPN 1000 Chicago radio and he said Steele got imaging done yesterday on his elbow and he said what he is hearing is more negative than positive on the results of it. Says don't expect a minimal stay on the IL. He kind of hinted about maybe possible Tommy John but he didn't come out and flat say it.

Yikes! Then again this is sadly becoming the norm for the Cubs to downplay injuries as "minimal/short term" that then wind up on extended IL stints. If he has to undergo TJ surgery, then the need to acquire a front half of the rotation arm becomes an urgent priority. Even bfore his injury another proven arm for the rotation was still a need for this team if they are going to compete this year.

The fact that the last TJ held for 8 years with the torque that he puts on that elbow is actually pretty impressive.

How did they downplay this? They put him on the IL and said he was getting an MRI.

Per Tommy Birch, Wicks was removed from the I-Cubs probable pitcher list for upcoming games. A plausible explanation is they are only bringing up Roberts to fill in as an extra reliever until the next time Steele's spot comes up, at which time Wicks will be called up.

I missed the part about the MRI on the initial reporting so that is my bad. I just remember reading they thought it was just tendinitis.
Yeah, I think there was hope all around it would be similar to last year.

I get questioning the FO in general and in regards to injuries, but I thought this one was handled just fine.

I thought Brett was pretty spot on over at Bleacher Nation. See how the next couple days play out and then make a decision on Sunday between Wicks, Rea, and Taillon.
