Didn't they also low ball him as well? They were "interested" in him last year too and according to BN they are "interested" in just about every big name FA every offseason. Until they actually sign one of these guys I usually just roll my eyes whenever they get excited about "reports" that the Cubs are in on anyone of significance. Remind me when was the last time we actually signed one of these types of guys, maybe when we signed Swanson?
Heyward. He was legitimately the best FA in that class. Nobody thought he was going to turn into a pumpkin. They were "interested" in him last year too and according to BN they are "interested" in just about every big name FA every offseason. No he just happened to be the "cheapest" of the best SS in a really good FA year for SS. Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa were the other 3 really good SS at the time that the Cubs were "in" on but ultimately got deals that the Cubs would not go up to. Bogaerts and Turner got 11 year deals while Correa got a 6 year with some optionsDidn't they also low ball him as well?
I think they would/will do some multi year contracts. Maybe not for the guys we want or the length we want, but I digress. If a big reason not to spend is because not wanting to spend long term dollars because of the upcoming CBA then why not offer up some big 1 year deals to some guys where it makes sense. The Cubs have money to spend and the Ricketts and FO just haven't been aggressive in tapping into the money they could spend. I still think they could go in on a big multi-year contract for the right starter either in free agency or acquiring one in a trade and still have payroll flexibility after the new CBA to spend with new parameters. We surely have the prospect capital to pull off a trade and take on some money in the process too.
I doubt they go big on a position player signing. I could see that being a deal with someone overpaying on a 1 year deal with maybe some options for something to extend it or opt outs but they aren't going in on the kind of deal for someone like Tucker and probably even Bregman will likely get which will be high AAV multi-year deals. The biggest/most expensive contract they have on the books after the 2026 season is Swanson. Everyone else is basically team controlled, free agents, or has some kind of option so it's not like they can't take on at least 1 big multi-year deal and if they do a starting pitcher would be the best position to invest at.
I’d really like to get Bregman, but I imagine once again we get outbid by someone else.Just feels like the Cubs should be making another decently bigger-ish move here in the next 24ish hours
Yeah I don't see them in on him on the price and years he likely is going to cost. If they make any kind of "bigger-ish" move I think it will be with pitching. 3B and corner OF are 2 positions we could upgrade at but I don't see the FO being seriously in on players that would add long term payroll at those positions.I’d really like to get Bregman, but I imagine once again we get outbid by someone else.
