*** Official 2025 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Brasier pitching means Counsel has given up on winning the game.
We got what we paid for. Instead of signing proven top pier players, we signed Flexen, Pomeranz, Brasier, Soroka, and Castro. Even Boyd is regressing to his career average.

Tonight I think Counsell was playing Castro (lefty) because of McGreevy's OBP is about 70 higher against lefties. Pretty frustrating being shutout by a guy with a 5 ERA. Way too many weak fly balls.
I am really frustrated that trading for Castro is the best we could do at the trade deadline

I thought the Cubs would be 7 back after the Brewers series… looking like that was too optimistic.

That’s a bad rule could you imagine losing a no hitter because a routine grounder to second hit the base runner?

Same here. I think he is vastly overrated. Is Tucker better than a player like Andy Pages?

Yea feel like Cubs should give Caissie a shot. Then if they can unload Happ, start Suzuki in the OF. Then sign an experienced $5-$10M OF like a Harrison Badar, Ramon Laureano, Austin Hayes, etc. A proven hitter with some slug who can be a platoon 4th OF and be insurance if Caissie struggles at the MLB level.

Currently Tucker is a .270 hitter with 18 HR's in 490 PA's and he's probably looking for excess of $30M. Is he worth the money when:
  • Austin Hayes: .260 /10 / 272
  • Ramon Laureano: .295 / 16 / 317
  • Harrison Badar: .253/ 13 / 322
Then spend the big $ on a Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonso, Marcel Azuna to play DH.

I am starting to question if Counsell was really an upgrade over Ross at this point. I was thrilled when they signed Counsell as I thought it was a pipedream we'd have any chance to get him. But his lineups and decision making in key spots in games so far has been no better than Ross and he has a better roster than Ross had at his disposal. Keeps trotting out Braiser lately and I thought earlier this season he finally had it figured out that keeping a consistent lineup and using your best bullpen arms was the key to success and now he's tinkering with it day to day like Ross did. Is Hoyer and the FO behind that or is it bad managing?

I can't believe we gave Jed an extension before seeing how this season finished. I am not giving the Ricketts a free pass either. It is so stupid how the state of major Chicago professional franchises are content with being mediocre to crappy for sustained time when Chicago is a top 3 market in the US. NY teams spend money, Boston and LA spend money but Chicago has Reinsdorf and Ricketts who who have tight purse strings and don't want to spend money on teams they own. The Bears have been a mess for a long time too. This is going to be an all-time tank job going from 2nd best record in all of MLB at the All Star break to possibly missing the playoffs if they can't get out of this quickly and start competing again.

The Padres and Mets and even the Reds did not mess around at the deadline and got better so a Wild Card spot with the way we are playing right now is not a given.

It is frustrating that our FO is unwilling to spend money because fans come to the park even if the Cubs are not very competitive.

I agree. I’m beginning to think Pat Murphy has been the “real” driver of the Brewers for years, and Counsell was just a passenger on the bus.
Murphy this year has taken players out of a game, after a couple of at bats, if he doesn’t like the pitches they swung at, or took. Same with errors in the field.
Can you imagine Counsell doing that?

The Brewers are playing fundamentally sound baseball unlike the Cubs

You realize Suarez is hitting .107 with 1 HR since being traded. Maybe his hand injury is worse than being led-on.

Matt Shaw is hitting .315 with 5 HR's since the All-Star break.
You can’t compare Suarez to Shaw or Castro. Suarez can explode for 2-4 homeruns on any given day. His presence in the line up will make other players better unlike Shaw and Castro.
