Weird January. Took a friend out into this thicket of woods in the middle of a wetland to get a look at some Long-eared Owls that have congregated there. Could not get to one little quadrant of the woods because the iced over portion I had walked over a couple of weeks ago was melted. Would have needed knee high waders. This is January in Minnesota?

I wait for @wxman1 to tell me what's going to happen.
This is guaranteed to change but the latest trends are keeping the worst of it to our south and east. If you are going to attempt to fly through St. Louis, O'Hare, Midway or Detroit Tuesday and Wednesday I would be looking to change those plans. If these models play out we will all have a few inches on the ground by the middle of the month. Michigan...woof no ice cover on Lake Michigan is really going to go bonkers for them.

Terry breaks it down well.

Is an Artic Blast still on the way for middle to late January?

I think you need to change your sources if that is what you are hearing.

Whether they miss it my just a minute or a mile, those who scream armageddon scream alone? Don't think so. It's unavoidable. And it's these "trained" people using those terms ad nauseam who now cry the loudest when the public plays pin the tail for being a fool.

Growing up on a farm before social media.....the weather man was always wrong whether he was or not. But respected and never looked at as something that just rolled out of a clown car. It's too bad these social media crusaders have muddied that profession.

WTH are you talking about? This was pulled from the forecast discussion today on the NWS:

"However, as has been continually stressed in past discussions, the system is still 5 days out and the pocket of energy that will eventually become the upper low is still well off the west coast of the US and Canada. Models do have some skill beyond day 5, but it’s often better to look at the general trends this far out rather than any specific details. Then, once the system is being observed in the US, solutions regarding snowfall amounts, timing, and location start to become a bit clearer and more skillful."

Just about every forecast I have heard has said they don't really know what's going to happen yet. If you are getting your weather from social media where people are trying to get clicks and likes then that's a you problem.

Yep. The Terry Swails forecast was showing -20 lows after Jan 17. Looks like WINTER is about to hit!!
Slight correction to that. The Terry Swails blog post showed screen captures of model guidance two weeks away showing lows at a level above the surface of -20.

I don't follow Richard from Sac City. I rely on Frankie McDonald. He hasn't put out any updates on Katter Rapids, Iowa or the Midwest so I'm not too concerned.

I haven't seen a Frankie weather alert for a couple of years it seems like.

I know how this game works.....I sit here and go, man, I can't believe there is no ice cover, followed up by 10 days later for two months, it's like the "day after tomorrow."
