***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I don't see the Cubs paying up for Alonso unless its a short deal like 1 year or some kinda 3 years with options. The kind of money and years he is wanting I would rather save that $ to make a bid on Tucker next offseason instead. Plus would need to make a trade or 2 to clear up a spot for him to play too. Just feels like they want to stick with Busch at 1B to me, he's young and still developing and in 2024 he and Alonso had almost the same WAR with Busch at 2.8 and Alonso 2.6. Yes Alonso has a lot more proven power right now but for the price you'd pay him compared to Busch I'm not sure that is money well spent. If you are going to splurge on someone it may as well be Bregman who is a 4.1 WAR last year and fills the black hole we've had at 3B lately. Yeah I know we have Shaw waiting but Shaw can also play 2B too just like you'd have to move Busch to 2B if you kept him and Alonso.

Both are probably pipe dreams for the Cubs to sign. I'd still like to see us package something together for a right handed starting pitcher that could slot in in the top half of the rotation. I know there is still some smoke about a Suzuki trade but I'd be a bit surprised if it actually happens.
I agree it’s unlikely I was just saying he’d be unbelievable protection for Tucker. If it’s an either or situation I’d rather get a top of the rotation starter but Sasaki would allow you to do both.

Realistically if we can extend Tucker we have him, PCA, Cassie and Alcantara or Canario long term. Infield wise we’re stuck with Swanson but have Busch and Shaw. I think they’ll stay with Hoerner until he, Happ and Suzuki’s contracts expire in 26. Hopefully at that point we reload with a major signing in the infield and one of the OF prospects hits.

Nothing big here, will be interesting if Brujan can make the opening day roster as he is out of options.
Interesting approach by the Cubs in the offseason adding Brujan and Workman with the young infield talent the Cubs have with Shaw, Vazquez and Triantos.

But guess competition is never a bad thing.

Was a bit surprised we didn’t get a little more. Brujan was DFAd you’d think mervis would garner an upside arm in the lower levels on top of a guy they decided to cut.

Maybe the 2022 Mervis but not the 2024 Mervis. Not much value for a hit only player who hasn't hit in his 2 brief stints in Chicago. And only hit .235 at AAA in 2024.

Brujan is a flyer, but at least he hit .222 in 248 AB at the MLB level last season. Plus he has a ton of position flexibility playing both infield and outfield. Plus has decent speed.

I'm an I-Cub season ticket holder and Mervis fell apart mentally after his failure with the Cubs this year. I think he still has an upside but not with this organization. This is the best for him and I'll be rooting for him.

Jed has historically been pretty bad at finding infield bench depth - Vargas, Madrigal, McKinstry, Mastro. My hope is Brujan is no more than competition for Workman. If Jed is intent on being a serious team this year, Brujan will not be playing much in Chicago.

What are you doing, collecting. 220 utility infielders? He did have a 2.1 WAR last year at least.

Add another name to the list, Josh Rojas the Mariners 3B in 2024. It's like Jed is approaching 3B as a numbers game. Bring in as many reclamation projects as possible and hope one can produce until Shaw is ready.

Rojas to Cubs?

Based on what I’ve seen from people who know much more than I, Cubs are looking at about $30M more to spend this offseason. The 4 areas they’re spending on for sure -

1 SP
Preference is Hoffman, convert him to a SP. If he fails, he can fall back to the bullpen. I can also see a trade for a Pre-Arb/Arb1 arm.

1 RP
Estevez? Yates?

1 Utility Infielder
If the Cubs believe Shaw is ready for 3B, I love the idea of Josh Rojas as the utility infielder. He has experience starting at 2B and 3B. He is not good enough to be an everydayer for a team wanting to play in October, but he is a massive upgrade to the Wisdom/Madrigal/Mastro role.

1 1B Backup
No ******* clue. Connor Joe? Mark Canha? Really just looking for a righty who mashes left handed pitching. My preference would be Spencer Torkelson, but I'm not sure if we'd be able to get a deal done.

Waiting for that big splash trade or signing after the Bellinger salary dump but so far been nothing but cheap reclamation moves since. There was no point in trading for Tucker and dumping Belli for next to nothing unless you add another quality SP, upgrade the bullpen, and maybe even upgrade another position somehow. Maybe they think Shaw Canario and Caissie are ready to be those upgrades and if that us the case what is stopping them from spending on better pitching? Feels a lot like another 80ish win season with the roster right now.

Some media speculation that the Sasaki signing is holding up some teams from signing FA's. Not sure if Cubs still feel they are a possibility.

One SP arm who could be interesting is Nick Pivetta of the Red Sox. Righty with a lot of swing & miss, plus an inning eater. He may be too expensive for Cubs and Cubs would have to give up a draft pick because Sox made Pivetta a qualifying offer.

I'll throw out a wild one. Any chance the Cubs take a flyer on Rizzo if they can get him at reasonable price? LH depth piece at 1B & DH. Good leader.

Still feel with Tucker add, the Cubs have to convince Suzuki his best path to playing field is 1B.

I would love to bring Rizzo back on a cheap 1 year deal but they need to make a lot of other meaningful moces before you could do that. Rizzo is one of my favorite Cubs but this point in his career he's just a backup player. Cubs need a backup st 1B but he's a guy you bring back only if your think you have a team that will compete and you think his leadership and bat off the bench is valuable enough for a spot on the 26 man roster.
