Win tonight and I allow myself some optimism. 3 series in a row against 3 of the worst teams in baseball....man. There's a chance.
I put 20 on them winning the WS after the last win streak. I know very unlikely but it was worth a shot at a $4800 payday.

I'm sticking with the idea that we have a chance, but we probably finish 1 game out of the wild card because of that long, horrible stretch of baseball.

I'm less optimistic of the offseason because Jed. We'll hear little stories about Juan Soto connections, but we'll never spend what he's looking for.

It's been fun watching PCA come into his own the past couple months. We knew he had the glove but he's really come a long ways with the bat and now that all aspects of his game he really has a swagger and confidence to him. He hit .314 in August and .355 so far in September. Post All-Star average has been .284. He's actually hitting lefties better than righties on the season too. I understand not wanting to mess up his hot streak right now but man he really should be hitting leadoff if this is the kind of player he can be. I would guess they will wait to try him there until next season.

He's a prime example how if we believe we have talent in our farm system we need to let these kids play every day when the get called up and let them figure it out else we're just messing with their development and turning guys that may have some prospect capital for trades into AAAA type guys that never pan out. I'm at that point where I am OK now with leaving Caissie in Iowa the rest of the year, maybe he gets a call up after their season is done and get a few AB but it also requires a 40 man roster move too so the best thing for his development is just leave him in Iowa then make that decision once Iowa's season is over. I don't get the point of why we brought up Vazquez not use him. He was called up Aug 23rd and seen action in only 6 games with a total of 3 AB. Meanwhile still have not issue playing Mastrobuoni and Wisdom instead when they give someone a day off who both likely will not be on the roster next year. Vazquez may not have the HR power of Wisdom but I can't imagine he could be any worse at the plate for some spot starts where he maybe gets a rare HR or strikes out 3 times. I don't view Vazquez as an every day player type of prospect but he has the skills and definitely the glove to be a decent utility player and why he is not getting a chance to be deployed like that right now is just wasting time he could be spending playing every day in Iowa right now.

At least it makes the Davis roster decision easy. No way you're tendering him at this point.

I wouldn't put it past them to tender him still but he's definitely at the point where it's a possibility as he can't stay healthy and they have several OF prospects already that are blocked too. Would hate to see him go sign a minor league deal somewhere else, finally get healthy, then become the player the Cubs were hoping he could be but that is just the risk you take I guess when it comes to 40 man roster decisions. They have several spots they need to open up as they already have 5 on the 60 day IL. Two of those probably aren't being tendered either in Brewer and Alzolay. Almonte Brown and Little are the other 3 and they will surely tender Brown while Almonte is 30 so not sure if they'll use a spot for someone that age although they proved me wrong last year by bringing back 32 year old Wisdom and 33 year old Tauchman.

Boy I want the Cubs in the playoffs but it is a TALL mountain to climb.
It's a product of playing like garbage for half the season and doing nothing coming into the season to address the bullpen C and 3B issues. The bullpen has been basically rebuilt from the group that started the season with a combination of minor league call ups, waiver pickups, and a trade. 3B is still an issue and have got better play out of the C spot lately although that is still an area of need going forward. PCA finally adjusting to MLB pitching really sparked things too, his charisma is likely rubbing off on the team and having an effect on their play too I think.

This was the opening day roster:

Pitchers (13+2 IL)
11 - Drew Smyly, LHP
18 - Shota Imanaga, LHP
25 - Yency Almonte, RHP
28 - Kyle Hendricks, RHP
35 - Justin Steele, LHP
36 - Jordan Wicks, LHP
38 - Mark Leiter, Jr., RHP
43 - Luke Little, LHP
45 - Caleb Kilian, RHP (60-day IL)
50 - Jameson Taillon, RHP (15-day IL)
51 - Héctor Neris, RHP
66 - Julian Merryweather, RHP
72 - Javier Assad, RHP
73 - Adbert Alzolay, RHP
74 - José Cuas, RHP
Catchers (2)
9 - Miguel Amaya
15 - Yan Gomes
Infielders (7+1 IL)
1 - Nick Madrigal
2 - Nico Hoerner
5 - Christopher Morel
7 - Dansby Swanson
16 - Patrick Wisdom (10-day IL)
20 - Miles Mastrobuoni (L)
29 - Michael Busch (L)
41 - Garrett Cooper
Outfielders (4)
8 - Ian Happ (S)
24 - Cody Bellinger (L)
27 - Seiya Suzuki
40 - Mike Tauchman (L)

7 of the relievers are either gone or on the IL right now, Cooper Gomes and Morel are gone and Madrigal once again has been hurt most of the year and in Iowa. Amazing we've stayed afloat with the pitching lately too with all the injuries and Hendricks basically washed up at this point.
