***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Well that totally takes the air out of the balloon. I’m sure Jed is working away to narrow down his offseason list of 35 year old relief pitchers coming off their second Tommy John.

It’s a weird two-fold situation.

Jed deserves credit for piecing together a bullpen that has been pretty damn good the last 2.5 months, including Lopez who was poor tonight.

But to give him credit, you also must acknowledge his lack of attention to the bullpen in the offseason is what forced him to fix it.

Hopefully we can be confident in our 2025 roster in April as opposed to July, which unfortunately is a tendency in the Hoyer regime.

Kilian's last start in Iowa was 8/27 so if they wanted to make a roster move today he could have taken this start instead of Hendricks. May still be the move they eventually make if they think Steele needs to go on the IL. I guess the bullpen better be ready early today if Kyle gets lit up again. Have to wonder how this would of been handled if Wesneski and Brown were both healthy options as well.

Stroman with an oblique issue and a month later it’s discovered he mysteriously broke a rib, taking him out longer than anticipated.

Adbert Alzolay injured last August, takes 11 months to realize he needs Tommy John surgery

Dansby Swanson plays 2 months of ****** baseball with a bad leg as opposed to an IL stint to get it better

Nico Hoerner sits on the bench for 8 days instead of a 10 day IL stint, so your roster is down a guy for 8 games.

Jorge Lopez flirting with an IL stint. Ultimately decided not to do it. He’s not himself next 2 outings, including a 4 game blowup that ultimately cost the team a win. Hits the IL 2 days later.

I don’t think we’ll see a complete sweep of the FO/Management, but whoever is heading these decisions has been a colossal failure and should not be a part of this organization. One or two I get, but our injury management is pure dog ****.

Top of the 1st perfectly summed up our season.

Runners on 2nd and 3rd. No outs.

Bellinger with a 3-0 count hits a lazy fly ball to right field. Runner tagged out at home.

Had a chance to win the game in the 1st. Played ourselves out of it

Of course it is. We need to start seeing some of the fielders as well.
Case in point...Vazquez can play 3rd too. Instead we are playing Paredes who has been a nothing at the plate and has 3 errors tonight to go with all of his others since he's been here. Instead we'll probably see Mastrobuoni.

That was fun!

Just close enough to still in the race where you can't push Shota back a couple days. I understand why he pulled him when if it kinda stinks that it happened.

Only negative of the night was Shota likely has an opportunity to throw all 9 if the our worthless 3B didn’t make him throw 20+ extra pitches tonight

Crazy extension for Matt Chapman. 6 WAR player this season making $18 MM. That’s 6.1 more WAR than Morel and you’d stay in the same luxury tax tier you’re on.

Bravo!

Yeah the number of years is crazy, they may get good value out of that over the next 2-3 years but $25 mil a year through age 37 the end of that might be rough.

I'm starting to wonder if Paredes was really an upgrade over Morel. They've both been pretty bad offensively since the trade and Paredes has not exactly been a big upgrade defensively at 3B either. Morel has made 3 errors with TB while Paredes has made 9 with the Cubs. 3B is still a position the Cubs need to look at an upgrade in the offseason if an opportunity presents itself in a trade. At this point I see no harm in seeing what Vazquez could do at 3B with a few starts. Not saying he is the answer there but he needs to get a look as a possibly utility INF for next season so move him around and give him some starts at 3B SS and 2B and give those guys a day off once in awhile.

Admittedly, I don't follow non-Cubs MLB real closely. But I've often wondered the same thing you mentioned. Beyond feeling like we have an inordinate amount of injuries in general, it seems like they do a horrible job of diagnosing and treating injuries.

Surprised Cub fans weren't on here talking about it. Can't believe they pulled him on 95 pitches.
If Parades doesn't have those errors theoretically Shota gets threw 8 tonight. If that were the case he pitches the 9th. As it was he's never going to finish anyway so the risk wasn't worth the reward.

He wasn't. Jed just wanted to move Morel.

The big regret is going to be giving up Ty Johnson in the deal. He has the look of a mid-rotation starter at the big league level. TINSTAAPP but still...
