***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Every 5th day reminder that Jed **** the bed not trading Taillon.

8.11 ERA and 7 HRs in 5 starts since July 29, when we opted to start him instead of consider a trade
He's still probably a solid backend of the rotation arm even with the recent struggles but he was probably at peak trade value at the deadline. Would kill to have been a fly on the wall to see what offers he passed on. If they go over the luxury tax by even $1 with this team Jed should be fired.

Even if they don't he still should be. At least with Theo there was a plan in place to rebuild that eventually led to a competitive window and a World Series. If you look at this roster and the farm system right now I don't see that kind of plan in place that we had leading up to 2016.

Problem is we have tons of solid backend of the rotation guys. We need a top half of the rotation righty to slide in between Steele and Imanaga.

IMO Taillon would have been traded if the starting rotation hadn't been hit with long-term injuries to Brown and Wicks. Then the week before trade deadline Wesneski goes on the IL and a month later I haven't seen a timeline on his return. Add to that Assad returned from IL right before All-Star game and we have seen he isn't the same pitcher as earlier in season.

Even though Taillon hasn't been great since late July, at least he has pitched 26.1 innings over those 5 starts. Taillon has given up 20 runs, but he hasn't got great run support during innings pitched over those five starts (0/4/7/1/2).

Maybe his trade value was highest in July, but he will still be a solid trade chip over the winter and I would expect he will be moved then. Teams will give up a high-level prospect to get a proven sub 4.00 ERA starter that eats 150+ innings a season.

Agreed, the Cubs need a top of rotation guy. I would also add, they need a power top-end guy. Steele, Imanaga, Assad and Wicks all max-out low 90's.

It would be great if Brown and Horton can impact the rotation at some point in 2025.

I agree which is why it's a massive failure by Hoyer if they had an offer for a decent prospect and savings in his contract and they did not pull the trigger on a deal.

I'm not holding my breath on Brown and Horton. Gotta stay healthy first.

Another gripe is it’s appearing we traded Morel and prospects for…Morel.

Can’t wait for Jed to be fired.
Paredes better get his a$$ in shape this off-season. Looks slow in the field, can barely bend over to field ground balls and has a slow bat at the plate.

I think you're right. The 40 man just didn't have a lot of long inning options available, or healthy prospects to fill behind to account for additional injury potential. And Imanaga is in uncharted innings pitched territory.

Kilian is healthy now and throwing well in Iowa He's started 4 games in August with a 1.45 ERA and 1.02 WHIP and has gone 5 innings in 2 of those 4 outings. May be time to give him a few starts in the rotation to finish the season out whether that is adding a 6th starter or skipping someone in the rotation possibly. Wicks is rehabbing and threw a good 4 innings at Iowa the other night with just 1 hit no walks and 4 K. Not sure what the status of Wesneski is right now but there are 2 or 3 possible guys that could eat some innings late in the season especially now that the Cubs are 5.5 games back in the wild card.

The roster only expands to 28 in September so only get 2 additional call ups. I fully expect Caissie to be 1 of them then probably a pitcher whether that is a starter or they do some up/down callups with relievers. If they are going to make room for anyone else someone either has to go down or get DFA. Keegan Thompson is throwing well lately in Iowa but whose spot in the pen would he take at the moment? Don't see them calling up any other position prospects like Shaw, Alcantara, or Ballesteros this year, Canario maybe gets another shot but again need a roster spot to make it happen. Mastrobuoni probably in the conversation too but we kinda know what we have there by now that would rather see 1 of the 2 OF get those AB than him after Sept 1 or if you really wanted in infielder then give Vazquez that spot first. Wisdom and/or Bote could be DFA if they really wanted to open up another roster spot too.

If the Cubs give up on the season, I could definitely see them DFA guys like Bote and Wisdom in September to give opportunity to prospects.

Calling up Killian or Wicks makes sense in Sept when rosters expand. The Cubs play 13 straight days from SEP 13 to 25. Would be nice to have another pitcher on roster who can throw starter pitches (50-75). Just in case they want to go with 6 man rotation or in case a starter gets bombed early in game.

I think the Cubs realistically are out of the playoff hunt at this point 5.5 games out with 5 teams ahead of them to get that last wild card spot. I very much hope they throw in the town by Sept 1 and cut some of the deadweight off the 40 man like those 2 guys as they should not be back next season and calling up a few prospects to get a look at in the last stretch of the season is more important than keeping Wisdom and Bote on the roster. That opens up 2 more spots on top of the 2 they get with the roster expansion. Even then they'll need to make an effort not to give them the Canario treatment like last season and find some ways to get them into the lineup a few days of the week which means giving some of the regulars more days off. The past month or so Counsell hasn't really changed the lineup much and run the same group out there nearly every game so would not hurt to sit 1 of the OF for a game a week and use the DH to get them some back-to-back starts.

I'd like to see Caissie, Canario (if he's healthy which right now he is not and sounds like best case scenario is mid September) Vazquez and maybe even Mervis then for pitchers (again all based on health) Kilian, Wicks, Wesneski, Thompson, maybe get another look at Palencia although his ERA is not great in Iowa. May only have 2-4 roster spots at most to get looks at those guys and some of it will depend on health of guys rehabbing as well as the health of the big league players too on who gets the call ups. Just think the best thing for the development of Shaw, Alcantara, and Ballesterios right now is finishing out the year in AAA as all 3 probably will start there again next year.

Despite likely having over $100 MM to spend next offseason, Sharma does not think the Cubs will make a serious attempt for Burnes or Soto.

Because more C level players for $20 MM might fix this team

that is fine to drop those two but will they ply the younger guys since bote pinchhit last night was his first atbat in how long and wisdom has only what less than 10 atbats in how long. if cc is not playing them will he give the younger guys a chance or just sit on the bench

That's my worry too. They have to commit to sitting a starting OF to open up the ABs for someone like Caissie so maybe just each take a turn where you sit at least 1 or 2 of PCA, Happ, Belli, and Suzuki, or sit 1 and play 1 at DH and start Caissie or even DH him and then the next day sit a different guy like its a "day off" and so on but keep Caissie in the lineup. Get him 3 or 4 starts in a row then sit him a day if you want then repeat the cycle again. Same if you want to give Vazquez a run, give Nico and Swanson a day off here or there and maybe use the DH depending on what you do with the OF and you get him maybe 2-3 starts in a row here and there. But that only works if you don't give CC the option of using Wisdom and Bote and you commit to sitting your regulars more often down the stretch once you concede the playoffs aren't going to happen. That's both on the FO and CC to be on the same page with. I am not confident that will actually happen but it should if you want to get a look at some guys that could be part of the 2025 picture.
