***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Another knock on computers making our lineups - Busch not starting vs a lefty, you make a trade that forces Busch in the game, and he rips a double off said lefty.
Not sure the starting lineup today had as much to do with L/R matchup as getting Wisdom and Bote some at bats after spark they provided on Sat night.

Heyman reporting Cubs are in on Snell.

This deadline reaks of Jed being told we have to be in the playoffs or he is done. I would HATE Snell.
Saw the reports, but doesn't sound like a good fit for Cubs based on JH recent comments about deadline moves need to make sense for multiple years. Snell has ability to opt out after this season. But he's owed some serious money by Giants/new team in 2025. So maybe his current deal is too lucrative to opt out based on his 2024 results.

Then again, if the Giants are willing to pick-up portion of 2025 salary if Snell chooses not to opt out, then maybe he's a good fit. It he would opt-out, the Cubs could always spend that money on another FA player.

If we're truly going for it in 24 we add a closer. Snell is just due diligence.

Snell makes no sense. Even if they trade Tallion there is depth in the system to fill the rotation and money savings to go after a top end starter in free agency without giving up prospect capital. Would be on the hook for prorated part of Snell's $23.5 mil this year then $38.5 mil price tag next year of he opts in. It's a player option that he very well could opt into since he's only made 10 starts this season and has a 5.10 ERA currently. He's been good in July, 24 innings pitched in 4 starts with a 0.75 ERA. I guess he could finish out the season on a tear then try his luck with the market seeking 3-5 year deal for long term security but given the Cubs problems they would have to make some significant upgrades on offense to make the playoffs and give him the chance to have a reason to not exercise that option.

I still would like to see the Cubs get creative and go after someone with some control that will help in 2025. Vlad Guerrero Jr is 1 I would be ok giving up significant prospects to acquire even with Busch at 1B right now. If you move Hoerner in another deal you slide Busch over to 2B and now have an infield of Guerrero Jr Busch Swanson Paredes and still have Shaw and Triantos knocking on the door next year at 2B or 3B. You get the inside track at trying to get Vlad Jr to resign. I don't know what it would take to get him but given how our top prospects have not exactly panned out in the big leagues lately I'd take a guy that has the kind of proven power that Vlad Jr has even if it costs us a couple of our top 5 guys. Caissie is currently blocked in the OF, Ballesteros may be the next coming of Kyle Schwarber as I'm not sold he can be an every day catcher or position player, Alcantara is still AA and blocked in the OF, the only 2 currently on the top 5 list I have hesitation to are Horton and Shaw at 1 and 2 and even then I think it makes sense to acquire a guy that has already proven himself over 6 MLB seasons and is still just 25 years old you take that gamble and go all in filling in the holes in the roster for 2025.

Went down for 2 of the 3 games. Huge Cubs crowds. Really enjoy Kauffman as a venue - easy in and out, easy to move around inside, and good sight lines.

We did too. The trade today was something else sitting around a bunch of Cub fans and hearing it ripple through the crowd. Weird. I think Bigge is the biggest part of the deal.

Kaufman is awesome and great place to be.

Taillon is the probable starter today. Will be curious if the Cubs follow through or sit him on more day. My preference would be sit him just in case you get that jaw-dropping offer for him.

Agreed, there are options for a spot start or even do a bullpen day if needed. No need to risk anything with him if there are any talks of a trade right now that could happen. Definately will be interesting to see if there are any surprises in the lineups today or tomorrow with a regular behing held out signally a possible trade in the works.

It would be malpractice to start him today. Just adjust your lineups and make him a probable for Wednesday at this point. Maybe you keep him, maybe you don't. But sending him out there today benefits no one.

Maybe some action spurring? Bellinger activated for tonight’s game at the last minute

Paredes is not activated, so maybe they just had an open spot and went for it

Just seems like a case where other teams called Jed’s bluff. Just have to hope he throws well. They’re hitting him hard through 2, just getting lucky
